It also looks to me like Basswood. It does have that red inside bark color you see in the hole.:binoculars:

    Yep, basswood.

It is nice burning wood, but only 14 mbtu's per cord, so low on the btu scale.

But, that's a lot of wood, even if it's only really good for shoulder season stuff.

Here's the one I have cut into rounds. IMG_20160424_172346800.jpg

Mother nature brought it down, so I might as well take it and turn it into firewood.

Light weight wood, white Heartwood, that reddish inner bark.

They usually grow in groups, although the one I have cut up was a loner.

The trunk broken off in your pic is another reason I say basswood. It's not very strong.

The leaves are a dead giveaway, but the bark looks like many more desirable firewood. tilia-americana-fl-ahaines-b.jpg

I think they are less prone to barberchair than many species, and simply will snap off.

I've got a few, hey it's wood. It all adds up towards the three year plan.

There's a good chance that thing is hollow. I cut one down that looked like that, It had 6 squirrels living in it. I made a planter out of it. image.jpeg
