Someone remind me every once in a while to never pizz off Ray. My sis-in-law had wood in a completely enclosed lean-to off the back of her garage. She hasn't retired and moved in yet and when she came up for a long weekend last fall, most of the wood had unappeared. I'd love to find the lowlife unfortunate individual who took it. I'm with Thistle......I've worked my whole life for every thing I have, and to have someone steal any of it would completely, um, upset my karmic equilibrium.
I was thinking it might be time to plant some land mines but if they set one off and blew themselves to itsy bitsy pieces it would be a shame if it did any damage to the wood!
That's genius they would not know if you were talking about about the landowner or an actual dog.......
In our mountains, there is a saying, "SSS" Shoot , Shovel, Silence. Nothing to be found. Anyone have a pig pen? "
Way too many places to lose someone up here. A secret is only a secret when just one person knows it.
And you'd probably get arrested if you caught someone, unless you had a warning sign posted..... Up here you have to post a warning if you have your property under video surveillance, ...so the thieves won't get in trouble, I guess....
Thieves are stupid, that's why they don't expect to be shot trying to burglarize private property. and who knows if burglary is their only motive?
Well I don't think it's cool to steal anything and I'll probably get lambasted in this forum for saying this, but if I had to have someone steal something out of my yard, I would be happy if it was just a bit of my firewood. That being said, I'm probably the only one in this thread that has a surveillance camera pointing at his woodshed.
I believe Colorado still has a law in the books the makes theft of firewood a hangin' offence. I have trees and rope.
It might be fun to drill some foot long one inch holes in a couple logs likely to be pilfered and fill 'em up with some black powder and cap 'em tight with some wood putty.... Just don't forget where you put them in the stack.
Just make them out of a distinctly different wood. If the stack is all oak, use a few maple splits for the "hot" logs.
Every time one of these stolen firewood threads comes up, somebody brings up the idea of loading some splits with black powder. I'm always afraid someone might actually try that, and I envision some down and out family guy lifting a bit of firewood to keep his family warm, throws a few of those loaded splits he swiped in the stove of his rental house and his kids sit in front of the stove to warm themselves and watch the fire through the glass. What happen next is unthinkable!
I think everyone reading this kind of thread knows that when the black powder in the firewood idea gets thrown around, it's just a bunch if guys blowing off steam at the injustice of the crime, knowing full well no one on this kind of forum would be dumb enough to do that. On the other hand, when I read stories of cords and cords of firewood being stolen from good honest hard working citizens, I also know it's never some down and out family guy doing the pilfering to keep his family warm, but instead some miscreant stealing it and selling it to engage in some immoral behavior, usually to buy drugs. So I don't feel so bad about BSing about filling wood with black powder, knowing it's never going to happen in real life, but also knowing that miscreants will continue to steal that which was gained by honest people through good hard honest work. And that really ticks me off.
Wih so much free wood available just for the asking, I agree that it's doubtful a family in hard times would resort to stealing. The perp is either A.) A moron, like Thistle's neighbor, or B.) out to sell it for quick cash.
I think people who have been a victim of major theft have a more visceral reaction to this kind of story. We had a Honda Accord stolen when I was in med school in Philly and one of my best friends was in dental school at the same time in Philly and had the same car stolen twice. Having a car stolen really disrupts your life but I can't imagine heating 100% with wood and having all my wood supply stolen. The idea of that just makes me livid. The thief probably has no idea how much that disrupts this poor family's life and likely doesn't give a damm.
