Worked this morning; and got home around 1:00pm. A neighbor put some brush out by the street, and there were some 8-12" chunks 3-4' long; so I made 2 trips with my wheelbarrow to haul them home. Looks like elm. Then I got the paraphernalia out to sweep my chimney. With only about 2 1/8cords burned this season; I was expecting minimal accumulation. Turns out that I was correct. Brushed the chimney so that all the soot, creosote would fall onto the baffle board in my Englander 13NC. I collected it all....................mostly brown, coffee grounds and ash that got on top of the baffle board....................no shiny stuff at all..............except on the chimney cap. Total volume was less than 4 cups.................and a good part of that was straight ash!!! I have about 3.5" of double wall stove pipe to the chimney connector. From there, I have 11' of class A chimney pipe..............of which, about 7' is above the roof line. I have a house with a 4/12 pitch that isn't that wide!!! This is the 1st year; of the 4 that I've been burning, where I didn't make at least 1 sweep during the "burning season"!!!! Dry wood rocks!!!! :stacke: I'm loving it!!! Thank you so much BWS, Scotty, Bogy, Rotti..........etc. You's guys are the cats dupa!!!!
Once you experience a burn season with good dry wood: You're a true wood hoarder with valuable knowledge ! You no longer wonder if there's a difference, "Now you Know" !
My dad asked if I'd swept our chimney during this burn season, and I said "I monitored it, and Nope, wasn't necessary!" Of course, most of my wood was dead standing, or blown down and all told CSS'd for two years min. He still didn't "get it"
Yep Eric I have a brother in law like that. I have him some wood this year that had seasoned for about 3 years. He still just thinks it is the wood and does not realize when it sits split and stacked how much dryer it is going to be.
MightyWhitey I wish everyone on this site would feel the same way as you. There is no convincing some no matter how hard you try...they will learn and experience it themselves in due time; that is, if they get around to making enough wood for future use. Good job on the sweep!
Was wondering about doing the same with my nc 30. No real issues as far as it getting clogged up going from the top down?
You'll need to pull the boards if you have any accumulation. Don't want that slowing down the exhaust flow. I pull the boards whenever I sweep in case I get a little overenthusiastic with the brush. Don't wanna poke a hole in the boards.
That's great! I haven't cleaned yet but expect some of the same results. Didn't get that slow sluggish fires or smoke into the house like the past years. This is the first of 3 years that I haven't had to clean during the season as well. Why? Just like you said, dry wood. When you get where you need to be it's a good feeling
I Learned that the hard way 1st year. Broke the baffle board into pieces. Luckily the fine folks at englander sent me a new one at cost. Now I take it all out, tubes and all
Yep.. Take the front tube out (2nd tube if you want to remove the boards easier). But the it all just drops down in the firebox.
I have back to back 45's right out of my stove to create an "offset" to clear a truss in my attic. I can brush from the top down and can feel when I hit the top "45" with the brush. When I feel that; I make 2 or 3 full "up and downs" with the brush, and call it good. Dry wood folks.....................dry wood!!!!
It's the burners that are new who will learn in two to three years about dry wood. That is, if they are trying to get ahead and break old habits!
