My next-door neighbor and hunting partner called me about 9:30 and said "Let's go cut some wood!" I said "Have we left yet?" The Santa Fe national forest started selling wood permits yesterday - $20 for cutting 5 cords and I bought mine then. So we headed out and had a great time, even snowed on us (we cut at about 9000 ft.) We both cut a half cord and returned about 2 PM with the haul (first 2 pics.) I stowed my gear and jumped in the hot tub with my favorite beverage (next pic.) About 5 minutes after the last pic we had a hail storm, pea-sized hail, then some rain. Now the sun is shining again! yep, only down timber can be cut, and no cutting in a few marked areas. There is so much down timber, though, the few restrictions have almost no impact on what's available. The loads have to be tagged, too, but I haven't heard of anyone getting stopped, even the bandits.

I cut mostly on national forest permits also. Still a couple snowdrifts and deep mudholes on my favorite road in the forest. Had to settle for some lower elavation juniper wood on sunday. I cant wait to get at some pines and larches, i think the road conditions will passable by sat.
about 30 miles total for yesterday's haul. We cut in a 5 year old burn area southwest of Los Alamos, all ponderosa pine. High winds, common here, blow down a lot of dead standing timber all over the national forest.
Is that the long bed Frontier? There's times (like when hauling firewood without my trailer) that I wish I had it on mine.
standard 6ft bed, the extender adds the height of the tailgate. my next truck will either have a true long bed or be a flat bed.
Are you able to pull the truck next to the work for close loading or do you have to stay on the trails?
Awesome! Our permits don't go on sale down here until the 16th. Going to take the morning off of work just to get mine.
Looks like a beautiful place to be cutting firewood. At that altitude, it has to still be a bit chilly too. Bet that hot tub really felt nice. We've talked about getting a hot tub as I think it would do my body nicely. However, I think if we did get one it would have to be indoors and also heated with wood.
we look for the easy stuff next to the road or we can back in and get close. There are lots of old logging roads and two-tracks, so we never have to carry very far. Sometimes we can back up to a low berm and walk right in the truck bed.
It was a bit cool, but cutting, spliting, and toting took the chill off quick! I do handyman stuff occasionally (painting, light carpentry, etc.) and after a day of work the hot tub really helps to ease the sore muscles.
