    Why would the bar be smoking like crazy on my 441 ? I tried taking off the bar, flipping it over, checking to make sure I have oil, adjusting the chain, etc. Still smoking. Just sharpened the chain before I started cutting today.

    Was the bar oil making its way to the bar? Make sure the oil channel to the bar isnt clogged.

    I'm not sure where the oil channel is. I'll have to pull out the manual.

    I had one do that when the sprocket tip got pinched. The sprocket should spin freely when the chain is off and you snap it with your finger.

    Plugged oil hole?

    Dull chain?

    Pinched bar or sprocket tip as Swags stated?

    An unevenly filed chain will cause binding and a hot bar.

    I'm going with that one too, no offense, but you did mention that you just sharpened. Can you post a close up of the chain?

    Several possible causes, several of which have been mentioned.

    * Pinched sprocket nose
    * Closed bar rails
    * Oiler not functioning or turned down (especially if you moved to a longer bar)
    * Wrong gauge chain
    * Plugged oil passage
    * Burred drivers
    * Dull chain (remember to take down the rakers aka depth gauges)
    * Chain too tight

    im thinking not oiling. you can see and feel the oil om a chain and thw thing will ne wet. take the saw and hold it a few inches feom concrete, afredh cut round or cardboard. rev it wot dor a few seconds stop and a few more. there should be a line of oil.

    Yah, +1 on that. Make sure the bar is getting oil first. Do what Clemsonfor suggests. If the saw bar is throwing off oil, then proceed to through the list that Guido posted.

    If the oil test fails: The oiler on a 441 is similar to most newer Stihl pro saws. There is a slot by the side of the bar mounts and a hole at one end where the oil should come out of. Pull the side cover and B&C off the saw and start it up and rev it moderately (not WOT) to see if the slot is filling with oil. It should gush oil. If not there is a clog in the oil galley, or you have a clogged oil filter or a pinched oil line. Check them all out. A low possibility is that the oil drive wire is broken and the pump is not being driven. But I have never seen that happen on a Stihl saw. Another possibility is that you have the oiler cranked all the way down. Flip the saw over and on the belly there is an oil screw to control the bar oil. Turn it to high (the wide end of the graphic symbol next to it on the saw). Also the air vent to the oil tank can be clogged up. I blow them out with compressed air. The oil vent is a tiny hole in the middle of a small round brass thingy above the oil slot.

    If there is oil flowing from the saw, check the bar and make sure that the oil holes are not clogged up. There is one on the top and one on the bottom of the bar. Blow them out with air or clear them out with a toothpick. Then run a narrow slot screwdriver along the bar grooves to clear out any debris and oil/sawdust caked up in there. It is fairly common that the oil holes clog up on bars. And again, if the bar is oiling and it is still smoking, revert to the non oil issues in Guido's list.

    And... make sure that the chain brake is off? :whistle:

    I don't think it's oiling enough. I will have to make adjustments mentioned before I go cutting again. Thanks for all the advice. The sprocket nose does spin freely. I think it's a lack of oil situation.

    Then che
    Then be sure to remove the bar and check the oil holes (as noted above).

    If it oiled fine before and you never adusted the oiler output? Then you have a clogged oil hole on bar, clogged filter, vent, or one of the few other things noted above.

    Remove cover, bar and chain. Start saw, and note how much oil is coming from the slot. Check bar hole, clean hole, and rail. Its more than likely a plugged hole, if you have not removed the bar and cleaned it in awhile.

    When was the last time the rails were cleaned and oil holes cleaned?

    I do this every fill or two, especially if I have a fresh round to point it at.
