Back from the valley of the shadow of death

The P2 project has exceeded even my best expectations.

Today the weather has cooperated a lot and things started to roll big time.

The interior got painted and all the wiring went back in, then the base went on and decided to put the outer sheet metal on for a photo shoot.

Really looking sharp.

I need to get the exhaust casting cleaned and reassembled with the motor and such and installed.

Still a bit of work before it's ready for prime time, but it's getting there.

The proof is in the pudding though.

When it's sitting there burning away and running smoothly it will be a sweet deal.

Then comes the tough sell, trying to get somebody to pay me what it's worth.

These are a sweet ride for a small house, or as a shoulder season stove that can double as a helper for a larger unit in a multiple stove setup like we have.

Truely, this little critter was likely destined for the scrap heap had I not rescued it.

No way could it have been put into service the way it was

UH HUH.
I am keeping a tight count on everything going into the little creature.

Complete tear down to the bare chassis.
Cleaned and repainted everything.
Many new bolts and screws throughout.
New glass for the door.
All new rope gaskets throughout the entire unit.
Updated draft fan assembly.
Room air squirrel cage cleaned and washed out.
New gasket on the room fan.
New auger bushing on the bottom.
Auger motor cleaned and checked over.
All the wiring inspected and a few connectors replaced.
Control board cleaned with electronic cleaner and checked for function
Fire back replaced
Draft fan casting/fan box insulation blanket replaced
Heat tube box upper flange area has added steel where the casting bolts on (added 1/4 inch steel)
Fire pot seal donut replaced.

Once finished, will run the unit for a couple hours to cure the paint and burn off any STINK.

Will be as good as a new one.

Still thinking on a price, but this little critter should fetch a good one.

I see used Whits that are junk listed for $500 plus and other used stuff listed at $1000 plus or more

 

Wow, what a difference. That will make someone an excellent stove once you get the few final touches done.

That is the plan as it stands, to get this little critter a new home ASAP

With spring well under way and summer close we might get a good shot at a sale with somebody looking to get things all set by fall.

Certainly no fun installing a stove in the WINTER

I did that twice here, and it sucks trying to get things done in the cold

 

More work scheduled for today.

The last person to work on this stove (More appropriately VIOLATE it) had removed the ceramic wool blanket that goes under the exhaust fan box to insulate it from the pellet hopper which is below the area of the fan box.

Decided yesterday that I should start looking for some of this stuff (1 inch thick white high temp insulation)

Can't finish the assembly without it.

Looked on ebay and the stuff was $75 for a 24" x 25 ft roll

I don't need that much.

Soooo.

Called around and after a few calls I found an outfit that sells it by the piece as parts for machines they make.

A 24" x 57" piece for $17

That is far better, and will give me some extra to put on the shelf.
I need a piece 9-1/2" x 13-1/2" so this will be fine.

Today if all goes well gonna try to get things much closer.

 

Went out to brunch and then off to a co called Western Ceramics.

They fixed me up with a lovely piece of spun ceramic wool blanket that's rated at 2000 F

Soooo.

Gotta go get to work on the project now.

What kind & What color paint did you use?

 

Forest Paint "Stove Bright" (Charcoal)

It is a metallic paint and was one of two colors this stove was offered in originally.

Sadly the factory paint had a bit more gloss than this stuff, but it is whats available in a good high heat color that matches the factory color chart.

This afternoon I went after things again and removed the sheet metal that I had stuck on for the "Photo shoot" or as they say in the airplane industry "Rollout"

Put the nice painted top and sides away for now and got after adding the reinforcing metal in the heat tube chamber where the casting bolts on.

Drilled and tapped them, so now all is ready to go in there.

With the new ceramic blanket ready to be cut life is really good.

Depending on tomorrows weather the plan is to get the seal rope silicone'd to the tube chamber top and the fan box all readied with new rope gasket and bolted to the casting.

Once this is ready to go the new ceramic blanket can be fit into the exhaust housing channel in the chassis and the exhaust housing assembly stuffed back in.

At this point things really come together fast.

I need to clean and paint the control panel door and then reinstall it and the panel.

Waiting till we get a bit warmer weather again to dry the paint quickly.

One piece of glass trim is missing so thinking about leaving all of it off and doing a faux trim using bright silver header paint around the windows and at the top of the side panels that were gold.

It needs a bit of glitz to set it off well.

I'm told by my kids that the gold is "TOO 80's"

I like the gold trim.

So I'm old school

Yes gold color is passe now so if I paint a stove to sell I use VHT ultra high temp 2,000 degree Flat Aluminum auto header paint for trim to give the stove some PeZaZ.

I painted the interior of the mechanical cabinet and the hopper with the stuff.

The Manufactures leave all that interior metal BARE "DO I HEAR RUSTY"

Cleaned it good and sprayed it flat silver to make it look top notch.

I may mask the door off and shoot the areas around the windows before I install the glass.

The trim on the top of the side panels was brass colored, but pretty ugly.

I sanded the trim and shot it with the stove bright when I did the sides.

Not sure just yet.

A bit more done this afternoon.

Got the rear seal rope installed (These area a real Richard Cranium to get just right)

Then whipped up a fresh door handle from a chunk of oak dowel.

When the silicone is set good that part will be ready to go.

I want to give the handle a coat of urethane to give it the finished look.

A 3 foot chunk of dowel was $9.54
A fresh factory handle is $$$$$$$$$

Basically the little guy is rebuilt from the ground up.

Used stuff that needs works sells for $500 and up around here.

A small unit can be a real plus, as the market in used units seems narrow.

Went to Harbor Freight and while I was there I spotted the CUTE little colored plastic squeeze clamps.

Just what the Doc ordered for installing seal rope and holding small things in place.

Wish I had had these a while back when doing the seal rope.

$1.99 well spent.
