My preference is to not own trucks wherever possible but our pivot construction is hampered by needing to hire cranes to stand em up.

Had been looking for a little 4WD crane truck but the prices are nuts. So I've bitten the bullet and bought a truck like the one below (ours is a 2007 model). Very comfy to drive and cheap, only $16,000.

The plan is to fit an oversized running rope crane behind the rear axle and put on a small tray so we can carry our bobcat around too and just lift it off/on with the crane. Failing that it will just need to be a knuckleboom and no bobcat room. Time will tell and it will probably cost another 15-20 grand to do the conversion but it will be perfect for what we need. Maybe the link below will work so you can see what I am talking about. I will post picks as we do the conversion if anyone is interested....

Nice Chickenman. Glad you found a truck. I would like to see that conversion when you get to it.

Ok Chickenman, need a little translation.
    a-pivot construction
    b-tray
    c-turntable
I'm guessing b&c might be trailer and 5th wheel (over here). No guess on (a).
I'd like to watch your build and good luck with your project.

    a- centre pivot irrigator.
b- tray, don't know what you call it , just the table top on the chassis I spose.
c- what the semi-trailer attaches to. W are taking that off to make room for the crane and tray.

We pick it up on Tuesday in Melbourne then we will bring it back and set to work with the oxy, grinders, and welders.

Now the truck is home. Notice that the Scania joins our Saab family as I still have the old Saab 93 convertible for the kids and the weekends. Have always had Saabs or atleast a Volvo (poor mans Saab). Glutton for punishment I suppose.

Still looking for a crane. Don't need and can't afford a new one. I would prefer a running rope crane but they are hard to come by. Have found a respectable donor truck on eBay, see below. The truck is stuffed but it is a sweet crane and the price is not too bad. Might have a bid on it.

    I also owned a 1958 DKW 3 cyl 2 stroke

Really? 4WD dual cab utes are top sellers here due to business tax concessions. The Toyota Hilux is now being easily outsold by the Ford Ranger which is a far better truck. I don't want either, I don't want to drive a truck and if I need to it will be a real TRUCK.....

Now that is waay cool

It is because they are all being exported to the middle East to ISIS. Weapon of choice for terrorists apparently.

Bought the junker on eBay for the $7,000 and tomorrow will head off with a buddy in the Scania to drive it home.
Hopefully it will make it. I have a 28 day permit so the plan is too drive it home, get the crane and tray off then put it back on eBay for $1. If it doesn't get picked up I will just drive it to the scrap yard.
Will post pics if we make it home....

My father had a late 60's or early 70's of those when I was a kid, small pickup but lots of fun camping/hunting trips in it. Cute lil thing.

Not any more. THey are all (not jusst Toyota) the size of a F100 now which is just stupid.
Call me contrarian but I just cannot understand why anyone would drive these bloated tractors. Give me a nippy car any day.

We love our "Widdle Smart car"

57 MPG hwy is sweet and 30 plus around town is still a big savings.

Used to run the Burbs all the time.

Just way too spendy to use the boat for a grocery getter.

Got the old clunker home yesterday. 25mph down the freeway in the pouring rain with no drivers side window or windscreen wipers and semi's whizzing past had me thinking I am getting too old for these cowboy stunts!

You can see by the photos she aint no beauty queen but look at that crane. She's a beauty! Way too big for this little truck but exactly what I need.
I was going to do the transfer myself but my brother reckons I should use a local engineering works as I will just stuff it up. He could be right so I might go around and see how busy they are.

THe Scania is around at the mechanics getting tidied up for the roadworthy and should be on the road by next week end. Not much to do on it, probably a 1,000 bucks I reckon. Will have to mount the crane over the rear axle on the Scania as there is no room behind the cab but that will help as the Scania is so light that the back wheels just spin all the time. Will chop up the tray to fit in front so the whole thing will look pretty weird but it is what we need.

I wasn't too worried about the side. I was more worried it might break off

Talked to the engineer dude and he is too busy. Looks like I will have the job after all
