Well, here it is! I'm super happy with my first bowl.

A nice chunk of spalted curly maple I simply could not throw in the fire. I already have another piece mounted in the lathe.

Wow! Lots of character to the piece.

I would be hooked on bowl making after that one....

Yeah, it's almost a bad thing. I now look carefully at every split before I put it in the wood stove! These are some of the pieces I pulled throughout this winter.

I have pulled a few from the splits pile, as well, but they certainly did not turn out that nice! Especially, on a first go round. Great work!

My dad bought the lathe a few months ago. He spent $75. We've both been doing little projects to learn along the way. Recently browsing craigslist, I found another one exactly like it. $80 later I had my own, with a full compliment of tools, which I later found was worth over the $80 buy in. So... search around, you may be able to find one on the cheap. It's a Duracraft/Craftsman model WL1236. I do no have any pictures, but a google search produced these.

I haven't even set mine up yet. I'm having too much fun hanging out with pop, so we'll just keep it that way.

I know they're not close to you but I wanted to show that they are in fact out there for a decent price. A little more research and the advanced turners say to steer clear of the mono-tube lathes. So maybe this one will be a stepping stone for me. It's getting the job done.

There are some woods that aren't worth your time. Mainly some softwoods that tear out really easy.

More action on the lathe today. Had another nice piece of spalted maple. This one had some pretty big splits as I got to the center. Oh well, guess I'll have to learn how to deal with them someday! Crappy phone pics:

The bottom will get cut off thin like a wine glass.
