Okay guys, probably a dumb question, but.... I have a couple Stihls, and 028 AV super and a little MS180c. I'm capable of filling the bar oil and fuel without spilling, but I'm just as likely to over fill, or shake a bit and miss the tank for a second, or whatever. So, aside from just being careful, what are the tricks to clean fills every time. Surely you guys have some good tips. The real tough one is the bar oil on the 028, since the handle requires that you pour from 6" away. I hate it when the dang thing is all gooped up with bar oil.
Like cmag said...Squeeze bottle . I use one of those king sized dishsoap bottles like you'd find at Sams . Doesn't need tubing .
The bike water bottle should work . I just went with the dish soap bottle as thats what I had. It's lasted over 5 years so it's been cost effective
My recent Mac 610 CL score (just like the one I bought new 21 yrs before) has the oil cap in a annoying spot behind the chain brake -only saw I have that's a real pain to fill.So I keep a spare 1quart motor oil bottle filled with bar oil for that purpose .Regular gallon jugs are too cumbersome, plus a funnel don't always work so great either, especially when you just need to pour a few ounces at a time. I also have a smaller dishwashing soap bottle with the pump that works great too.
For bar oil I use a French's mustard squeeze bottle. It has a cone shaped twist to open spout. It has a large mouth so it is easy to refill from a gallon jug.
I knew you guys would have some great tips! Keep 'em coming. It's hard enough to pack everything I need up the hill on my place when I'm cutting, so adding another little thing like a funnel doesn't appeal to me. These are great! I can leave the big jugs in the truck and just pack a little guy. How many fills are you guys getting from these solutions?
Try to not spill when filling the squeeze bottle. The Rancher oil fill is in a stupid spot too, and I end up with some on the saw almost every time. A rag works wonders for cleanup.
u can look on uour saw specs and see the oil and fuel capacity and then see how big ur bottle is. the stihl 650 in rebuilding holds almost a qt of gas! the husky372 seems like it holds 20 ozs of gas and maybe 10 oz of oil. it really taks some fluid when u fill it. my stihl 390 is way better on fuel.
Putting oil in our B&S engine on the splitter can be a trial. So I simply fill an oil can, one with the squeeze handle like you'd use for oiling various things. This one has the flexible spout so is very handy. I simply keep the same oil in this and when needed it does not take long to fill the engine.
Look for the small gas tanks that have the lever on the nozzle to shut off flow. They work great. You can tilt the tank into position, then push the lever with your thumb to start and stop gas flow. Very tidy.
Beware that most of them with the lever either leak or break with more than occasional use. And ALL of them are excruciatingly slow for filling anything other than your saw/weed wacker, blower, etc. I highly recommend the NoSpill brand for plastic cans. Faster than the average box-store brand can, easy to use/control, and much more durable than any other poly can I've seen. At this time, it is my pleasure to introduce NoSpill Jill to FHC.com
Thank you for the intro MM! Okay, I've typed like five serious comments about that product and my desire to purchase one and they all sound dirty. I give up, but thanks man!
Hey, a guys gotta do what a guys gotta do. You were in the market for some serious cans and she's got the nicest ones around. What's wrong with that?
Sometimes the lid/pointed cap of the gear bottles will screw onto your bar/chain oil jugs if you don't want to transfer the oil.
