Got some firewood today, 9 bundles in all my buddy got 5 and 4 for myself, feeling like this might be the year I get ahead and get on a solid 2 year plan! The guy we got them from owns a sawmill, said on a busy day that he makes 5 bundles, he had probably close to 45 bundles laying around, at $30 a bundle loaded up for us I can't afford not to! Going to cut up these bundles and hopefully in the next week or 2 we'll get another 8-10. And of course here's a picture! IMG_0226.jpg

That's 5. He figured about 4000 a bundle, is mixed hardwoods, some oak some maple some everything, there's a few slabs my friend can sell to pay for the whole day, I'll also be using some of it to build a moveable wood shed this summer (fingers crossed)

Just a wood shed for all this firewood, but instead of anchoring it into the ground with concrete I'll throw it up on skids, so if I ever want to move/sell it, it won't be a gigantic headache. I'm not sure what the future holds with my boiler, it needs new water lines put underground and is already 15 years old, on top of that I'd like to put a shop up in the next 5 years. So a semi portable woodshed seems like a better idea than permanent.

Oh and it should be pretty close to one full cord. Or about 3 face cord depending who you ask:D

Sounds like a good idea, once you get firewood in it its not going anywhere

That's what I figure, I'll plan on never having less than 3 pick up loads in it unless it's going to be moved which will be a rarity in itself, not sure on dimensions yet but will keep everyone posted when I start

I burned nothing but "slabs" the first year I had my OWB. Friend of mine owns a saw mill and produces bundles of these every day. I found them to be a little bit of a pain to process, though. I ended up cutting the entire bunch at once, almost treating it like a very large tree trunk. For me it was 30" bucks.

Honestly, I think $30 a bundle is high, but if your good with it, that's all that matters. My friend usually processes the larger chucks into camp firewood and sells it by the pick up load in the summer.

Sometimes there isn't much meat on the bone, sometimes there is. It's good wood for early and late season.

I was hoping to get him down to 25, but it should work out, he may have weld/fab work for me to trade or make my money back, what did you pay with your buddy discount? If you don't mind me asking. I figured as easy as this will be to cut and not split %90 of it and stack, I will come out way ahead on time and is a third of the price for the same amount of wood in logs

My grandpa has one of those I remember helping him when I was young, they are very fast! But just as dangerous!

That's a nice load! I've been having trouble cutting my slabs up for firewood. If there's any decent meat on them, they end up making the trip between the sawbuck and the log pile several times, cause I just can't bring myself to chop them up. I was going to suggest saving some of the live edged lumber - great idea with the wood shed! What better to build your wood shed from, than firewood!

The one thing to be careful about when you stack it is to make sure to "stack in" a little airspace. If you have 2 flat faces touching, they'll tend to trap moisture between them and never dry out.

I used to almost always have slabs around for my old stove but this cat stove just doesn't do so well on them. Amish are working about a 40 acres woods right now on one of the farms I cut on. They are selling slab bundles for $10.00, my good friend that has an OWB has already hauled 22 bundles home.

Nice thing is my buddy sells a lot of wood he gets slabbed up, black walnut elm oak and everything between, so when I come across a good score it's likely it'll puay for the trip. Everything else that's somewhat dimensional will be used for projects and everything after that is firewood, that reminds me I got some more pictures of a ton of black walnut pieces from the wood dump that will be used in a bunch more projects!

$10 is a steal, if there a full cord, what do they measure out to? This guy has a rack that he puts all the slabs on as they come off the saw, I forget the measurements, something like 42"deep 54"tall and slabs are typically 98" long, then he bands it and starts all over again
