Friday afternoon, we took a drive to explore a new area for firewood cutting. Weather was summer time perfect.

We got up high above the Nimpkish Valley and I was taking pics into the western setting sun so they are not that great. I am getting used to using a phone instead of the camera.

Looking back to where we came from.

Looking down below us. The highway down island is hiding in there.

Looking south east. If you were on top of the hills across the way, you could see the Pacific ocean.

So today, we decided to go back to this area and do some more scouting. campinspecter decided to bring his saw so we could cut cookies and see what quality of wood is in this area. The big Husky is in the shop for a tune-up so he brought his Homelite.

    Look what we found.

Some cookies were a little big. Campinspecter thought at first it was pine but when we got it home and started splitting it, he thinks it might be a hemlock snag.

Air bags were pumped up pretty quick to bring these home. And no, we didn't buck them up with the Homelite. Someone started to buck up the log and left these rounds for us.

Looks like a nice day out! BC had beautiful weather this weekend even in the Rockies. I think we hit around 15 c today and the last of the old snow left my back yard today! Thanks for sharing your outing with us. Im not familiar with the wood you picked up and minus the bark makes it that much more difficult. I was head scratching a bit but couldnt id it. Its not cedar obviously, its also not fir. Let me know if you figure it out. Cheers!

The trees grow so straight out there they look like telephone poles.

I think the species is Balsam Fir. Not the best of firewood, but it was there for the taking!

And it will burn. Plus you don't need as much heat where you are so the fir should work okay, especially for daytime burning. Still a nice find.

    Thanks for the pictures Woodwidow

    Adding pictures to this thread

campinspecter went out later in the week and brought back more of that log. We split and stored it in one of our firewood bins before taking it to Granny's.

Today we loaded it into the truck. Turned out not to be quite a full load but a nice one. campinspecter is now thinking it is pine.

Truck loaded and ready to go.

Best part is that with the saw back from the shop and an empty firewood bin, campinspecter can go out to get some more.
