Winch advice please? I have a 2000 lb atv winch I was going to use with the lift but it is dead in the box. Now I'm debating a HF electric or manual crank winch. Would a manual crank work and be easy to crank or should I stick with electric?

How often and how fast do you need to cycle the lift? If it's only for the occasional monster round, manual winch would simplify things quite a bit. If you only split monster rounds, then I would go electric.

You've got the hydro's right there, why not get a small cylinder and make it all one power source?

Because its expensive compared to a $30 lift and not really necessary. I have everything for a winch except the winch to do it on hand. My buddy just gave me a manual 2 way boat winch today so I should be good to go. I spent the majority of the restoration money on hydro lines and a pump for this guy and after all that expense I'm ready to save a little.

It depends on where I'm cutting really sometimes a lot sometimes not at all. Mabe the manual 2 way will work out well I only need about 19" of cable on it. If not ill just slap a cheap ATV winch on from HF.

You can always retro the hydraulic lift later. Will give you the best of both worlds in cycle time and strength.

RKO here in Ohio has some cheap winches. I think they were like $70? IIRC?

Gonna be slow going, but better than using the legs and back :)

    Looking good Pete.

I have seen several splitters which used pulleys & cable to connect the lift to the sled the ram of the splitting cylinder is attached to where the lift would be pulled up while the ram was being retracted. Simple and inexpensive.

If I had a stronger splitter I'd consider a log lift like PP s going with, but because my 22 ton isn't very big or strong I stick with vertical when I do have large rounds.
PP, what size splitter do you have?

Its 26" long I put a 212cc motor and a 12gpm pump on it too. The cylinder is 4" if I remember right I'm not sure the beam size but it's pretty good strength. I have never bent the beam yet and it splits just bout everything I throw at it and fast.

Well I'm placing the order tonight fellas I sold my mig and am selling the arc so I can upgrade to a better mig. I already have some very very good advice but I want yours too. I have used many brands but I have to admit this guy makes me drool I mean it's really REALLLLLLY nice. Lincoln Electric 180
    http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200405531_200405531

My next one I'm considering is a hobart 190 I have used one and though nice the gun feels wrong but that can be changed. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200482378_200482378

And lastly this one is made in conjunction with Lincoln and is supposedly very very nice. The body shop in town runs 3 of them and hasn't had any issue in 4 years of heavy use..http://www.amazon.com/Eastwood-Welder-220VAC-Welding-Spool/dp/B003SFJEK6 the kicker and why I am considering is the price and the 30 day no question guarantee as well as the 3 year full warrantee. ( same as lincoln I think )

3/8ths capability on 220V, small enough to be portable, but has the ability to run from 110V too.

If I wasn't providing free room and board for my neighbor's Millermatic 140 already, the 211 would certainly meet all of my needs here in the shop and retain 110V capability to run from the trailer. I have my heart set on a 252 but honestly, that's a lot more machine than I "need".

Please consider: I'm not sure how I missed it the first time, but I was looking at you original post & noticed you have the hydraulic oil filter in the suction line between the tank/reservoir & the pump. This was how I had built mine. After having researched the subject, I moved my filter to the return side of the tank. There is less chance of damaging the pump if the filter has a failure or gets clogged up.

This is generally correct. Strainers (screens) on the suction side and filters in the return line. There are downsides to any location however. If your filter is in the return line, the filter mounting base must have a pressure relief/bypass in it set for whatever pressure the filter is rated to handle. If you have a clogged filter in the return line, you might never realize it as the filter would be bypassing oil constantly, allowing the system to function but rendering the filter useless.

The only sure fire cure is to change the filter regularly. ;)
