It should work good too. It looks like it still has some curve to it. The curve to the head just seems to stick in the wood well.
Got my Skidderoon yesterday via brown truck. Tried it out today and am pretty sold already. Found that it worked better to stick in the sides of the logs rather than the ends. Kept me from bending many times while feeding the splitter and surely saved my back some pains. If you don't have one of these tools, get one. You'll be glad you did. My short handled Dixie is not here yet. Waiting for order minimum at work. I think it will be mighty handy as well.
I got the Dixie brand short handle last week. Tried it out today while splitting some beech with the hydro. I like it! The handle feels great and offers a good perch when you have 20lbs hanging off it. At first, I couldn't manage to keep it handy, so I came up with this solution My larger violation usually leans in that area. Speaking of which, I ended up switching to the Skidderoon about halfway through. Even though I pre split them, the beech was still quite heavy and the longer handle let me better grab with two hands.
Nice, You might want to try mounting a magnet somewhere on the machine . Keeps it handy , out of the way and eliminates having to stick and un stick it.
Good Idea! I realize that the leaning log wasn't a good long term solution. I like the idea of magnets. Can't believe I waited so long to try hookaroons. Fast becoming some of my favorite tools. I have another on order at the moment. How do you keep your long handled roonies handy? I have just been leaning mine on the hydraulic lines in the above picture.
Havent entirely decided which one to get,but am leaning towards a Peavey Hume 30" or 36" pickaroon in a few weeks.Maybe the 15" to go with also.Should work nicely with my Husqvarna tongs.
I will have me some tongs in the future also. Husqvarna seems to be a popular choice on the tongs. The Hume pattern works well on my Dixie 18". Going to try a long handle Dixie 1.5# curved next. I get pretty good pricing on them, so may end up with a few.
I haven't given that much thought yet. If I found some place where it was best suited to be kept at the ready at the splitter- maybe a plastic pipe or tube mounted to put the sharp side in. I try to keep all the sharp stuff like axes, mauls, sappies in a bucket when not in use. Easier to keep track of and safer.
I was working with this puppy the other day , doesn't take much effort to stick it and grab a hold good. The way the handle is you can lift some good weight with it
Yes, not my splitter- temporary mount. One magnet is stronger than the other with a 1/2x13 coupling nut in between. The different strengths allows to sappie to lift off , not the mount. Welding magnets work also. I got the idea after seeing one on a European wood processer.
I made a simple wire hook to keep my tongs handy, slips off if I need to go vertical and a pvc holder for my hatchet
