Free Oak Uh oh....Free dead Bur Oak,I have a couple weeks off work,several big saws & this is just a few minutes from me. Not much space unfortunately though.I'm in the process of reorganizing/moving/condensing stuff in backyard so another shed can be built sometime later this Spring/Summer.
No kidding.But I'm trying to make some space for a 2nd shed,damm thing isn't even built yet & it'll be full soon after its done.It might not get done unless I give away some wood (burned about 20% less than usual this winter) or haul it elsewhere for storage. That is tempting though,guessing its 24",maybe 30" max.Could get a few short slabs from it,plus the scraps would burn good & shavings are good mulch. See what I did there? It'll probably be there a few weeks most likely.Average woodburning homeowner around here don't want/need anything that big,even if they had equipment to process it.They'll grab the small straight easy to split stuff up to 10"-12" that's on the curb or in a CL ad.
Solved that problem..... Parents said ''any of that big stuff you want to haul out here to store & later mill is OK''. Since probably 80% of my firewood stash stays out there until its needed anyway. Thankfully the really big stuff (28-36"+) has already been cut into slabs/blocks & wont have to be moved.Some of them were 800 to over 1000 pounds.I don't have any way to move them other than my back,5 foot peavey & a huge prybar... Since my tree service contact 2-3 yrs ago used his dump trailer to deliver them to me Most everything left is 15 to 24 diameter,no more than 30 inches long.Though there's about a dozen 10 to 14" Walnut & Cherry that's 4 to 6 feet long.I'll sort through them & the smallest or worst quality will get cut/split for fuel.Anything 250lbs or less can be rolled up those 2 x 12 ramps I keep in the truck at all times. Works for transporting anything I cant or don't wanna lift into the bed. Gonna take several trips,might be May-June before its all moved but at least that's one less thing to be a problem later.
So far just over half has been moved to its new location.A bunch of nicer small slabs/blocks went inside basement room of parents little woodland cabin.A few in the garage.Culled a few of the worst ones - too many cracks,some mould/fungus (what with all the rain we had in spring/summer 2015 its no wonder) they are in firewood stack now Black Walnut/Black Cherry 12-16" diameter.Next couple trips will be the remaining mixed slabs/blocks up to 36" wide/36" long.White Oak & Honey Locust slabs plus Honey Locust logs 15" to 24" diameter sitting here since Aug 2012 Lots more room at their place,even though it is an hour away. I've had no complaints from neighbors here over the years about my mess & the occasional noise from the saws. And I intend on keeping it that way.Not concerned about them really,just some nosy busybody that's driving by or lives a couple blocks over who would be the pain in the azz.
