I was surprised some of our paper companies have not gotten involved in pellets. We have a few of local paper makers as well as a couple of the megaliths here. I stopped at the local watering hole a while back, where the ivory tower types go on hump day to commiserate, and asked. Apparently the margins are just to tight internationally and the regulatory hurdles in our area make the jump difficult to justify the cost even though they have huge lumber holdings that are at this time under utilized. He did not feel that residential pellets were a worthwhile investment because the market was too small regionally and shipping to costly nationally to make much dent in the bottom line. They currently are able to use their waste product to make steam, heat, and electricity for the mill. Most likely his mill is representative of the rest.
And they are closing their doors one after another. Cost of energy is the one of the major factors given.
The mills in this area usually turn their waste wood into steam to run the machines, make electricity, and sometimes provide space heating. A couple of them also have cogen plants. Apparently there is no significant advantage to adding another layer (converting burnable scraps to burnable pellets) to the process.

Same $$ for instant heatless or Geneva as Barefoot? Did the Barefoot quality plummet that much? Anybody try the Eco-Woods yet? Price seems to be somewhat of a bargain(For a pellet house anyway). Geez, They can't be any worst that the Instant heatless!! No way I'd spend that amount a beans on something ya that can be had at a BBS for far less.
My regular pellet house released pricing this morning. Not 99/ton and not 199/ton but they have dropped in price from the last 3 or so years... These are stored inside while being handled well.
What ya thinking about ordering? Wonder why Corinth isn't peddling their 100% softy? The 80%SW/20%HW is also decent(AKA IG's). But IMHO they are leaving their best stuff on the side lines. I even asked Larry Carrier, But never got a reply!!
Well since I will likely end this season with 3-3.5 ton of Lacrete, I may get a few pallets of Corinth or Crabbe. I havent found any of the Corinth 100 soft
Neither have I, I got a few trial bags in 2012 and they were a hit in my heap. Expected them to at least try to make them available. Yet I still see nada!! How do you like the 80%SW/20%HW blend?? I thought they were far better than their old blend. Never burned them Crabbies(Your thoughts?), Haven't seen them and if we did, Wife would likely say I'm crabby enough!!
The corinth 80/20 have been great and REALLY wanted to score the IG at 99..... I havnt tried the Crabbe yet and going to try and get a few bags today if I have time to make the 45 minute trip to Sanford Maine. So far, Dave hasnt steered me wrong in trying anything he recommends before I burned them...the Corinths were one of those recommendations and they panned out well. Since he heats with pellets at home and at the shop, he has a pretty good take on most of his product.
Look good to me going by the youtuber vid. Besides the IG's I can't seem to find these! Wouldn't mind doing a review on them!!
As of a few days ago when I spoke to Larry Carrier, he still has Corinth 100% softwood and based on the numbers he told me, the 100% SW is only $10 to $20 higher then the 80%/20% blend. I purchased my first multi-ton batch of pellets through David Dionne. He does a nice job of placement of the pallets and will replace any bags that are torn. I think if David realizes that there are people who want the Corinth 100% SW, I am sure he can get them. My guess is that since David is selling the HJ Crabbe 100% SW, David maybe felt it was not necessary to stock two 100% SW that are close in price/quality.
I'm not impressed with the IG at all. In my opinion Natures Own, MWP and Timber Heat are all better. Nice prices on the Lacrete and Spruce Pointe. Wish I could get them at that price.
