what a crazy day. Wife asked me to turn off the stove. said SHE was too warm. Me, I am battling hot and cold. Snow is in the forecast with ice this PM, but the weekend should be sunny and warmer. Daughter in law (son and her live upstairs) is having surgery today. A hernia repair. Who would think someone who is size 6 would get a hernia. I need to get moving. dish pan is full etc. you have a nice and safe day.

The manure when combined with a winter green manure, even if it's not a winter kill, you're adding the organic matter those worms really need. Want to kick it up some more? Double dig your planting beds and bury gobs of compostable materials. I've been bringing in truck loads of wood chips and composted materials from other farms while combining them with my compost.

When I bought my farm the fields had been badly neglected hay fields for thirty years. I had the absolute wrong approach and tried to use organic fertilizers. They weren't efficient enough and too costly to make up the difference. Crops failed miserably. I had to find the answer...read, read, read, read, then I started to get it. After bringing in 120 tons of organic matter per planting acre. I plowed, sub soiled it and tilled it in; for the last time. If you get enough organic materials in the soil, you won't need fertilizer. The worms will proliferate and you will begin to have a sustainable vermiculture. In Europe they actually began to bury different types of trees and branches also called hugelkultur. I have planting rows that I have started this approach also.

The ph level and the percentage of organic material will directly correspond to how many worms you have. When your soil is right, your wife won't need to worry about picking them out. You won't need fertilizer or tilling, the worms will do it for you. Occasionally you may need to aerate the soil with a broad fork due to compaction of the soil.

I hear you - they are difficult to get going if not stored in pristine condition, need to show the one here some love before start of season..

These little motors do -not- like ethanol blended gas, at all. :headbang:

And they do jump, tilling the raised flower beds in the front yard is always a fun & interesting workout.

Cool! Going to order one today, Thanks much!

haha, I still have two of them and I had the same experience. Their real issue is the crap gas we get. I't not gas, it's a chemical composition that wicks water into the mix within weeks of purchase. My lawn mower has the same issue, but it will run sounding sick, but it will run. Most gas stations are now carrying non ethanol gas, I'm thinking I need to getting those puppies up and running again. I need to find someone who wants one...or two.

    Glad to help!:handshake:

If you asked me when we started with the organic principles I would have said run! :headbang:. The weeds were out of control, the diseases were running rampant, nothing would grow worth crap, the plants were so weak the bugs and diseases would come from every other farm to my fields.:startled:

The soil is everything! If you soil is right, your fruit and produce will taste better and stay fresher substantially longer, the weeds will pull easier, the insects will seem to be more interested in your neighbors plants than yours. The biggest thing is I don't have to physically work as hard!!!!

BTW, I still have squash and potatoes ( I shipped a bag this AM).
