I checked an area that I haven't been to in a year, the wind snapped this Sugar Maple off where it was rotten. I still have some rounds left so I'll get those when the weather permits.
We've only had the good fortune to burn sugar maple a few times. It made that old VC cat stove run really hot and lasted for hours. It's great firewood so I'm always on the lookout for more.
It's the greatest! dries in about 18 months.. lots of BTUs. and plentiful up here.. in fact most of them are tapped out right now so before firewood they give my waffles great taste
You got your hands full in that area....... I found what I think is either silver or black birch that came down and landed on a huge boulder. Ill bring the camera to get confirmation on species next time im over in that section.
Sugar maple is one of favorites, just hauled some home last Monday. If we dry up I may go after some more.
Yep, lots of dead pine in that area, I used to have a small trail up to the left of the picture but many of the dead pine came down over the last couple of years. I will be clearing a new trail in that area this summer/fall. I'm thinking once I get the bigger Sugar Maple and two good size Cherry that are down, I'll start the trail work.
My brother won't even consider burning a maple of any type...He's an oak, ash and hickory man. Throw in an ocasional locust and he's ecstatic. That's ok, because I burn the dickens out of it. Lots of heat there. I do split asap and get it into the shed though.
you didn't GIBIR that stuff I dropped one today that "looked" solid - opposite side of my face cut fell apart, no pull wood left and I barely got out of the back cut before the far side of the tree collapsed. Tree is rotten ~30' up on only one side
The last I checked one was doing good and the others were coming slow. This young fella was looking for something to eat.
I have a ton of work on the property around the house to work on, more dead pine. We also have the garden, it will be a little bigger this year.
He must not be in the know that sugar maple has a little more btu's than any oak, and a lot more btu's than ash. Yes, the hickory and locust have more btu's than the sugar, but if he's turning down sugar maple for ash, he's missing out. And you are benefitting.
