No Longer Available Solid 4x4 quad

Im in Cresson, Pa and we have enough Pa members here I thought Id throw it out.

Looking for a solid 4x4. Not picky on brand. Really needing one for around our property for work. Shoot me a pm if you have one of interest or know of one. I can send you my cell to chat. Really looking to stay under the 2500 mark.

If you don't want to spend a lot, and have all the features you want and need for a firewood getter, look at Kawasaki bayou 300 and 400s. Later they called the bayou, the prairie. For towing, you want a rear solid axle. Also, I'm a big fan of Polaris anything, but the belt drive CVT transmission on Polaris are not the best for heavy towing as well. We have an 05 sportsman 500, bought new in 04, and while it's a great ATV, it is heavier, more complicated, and more expensive than my old bayou 300. The sportsman is a better trail quad, and you can fit 2 adults on it easily.

Bang for your buck, absolute stone reliable, and built like a brick, bayous are really really good. You can find a mint condition one for 2k. Honda's are good too, but always cost way more due to notoriety.

If you want to take a trip south to Virginia, I have a Yamaha Kodiak 400 with less than 500 miles. 4x4 with hi/lo and reverse, racks front and back and CB radio.

As far as older reliable machines,
I'd recommend a polaris sportsman 400 or 500HO. (Full sized, independent suspension for better ride)
Easy to find. Best ride in the business.

I have a newer Polaris 550xp. (one that was on the trailer when you were here) Love it. And I always 'tow' in low range just to be safe.

Never used the low range in our old Kodiak 450. It was geared plenty low and the wet clutch works good. Great machine but the ride is just not there with the solid axle and mid size frame. IMHO.
(Still have it. but doesn't get used too much)

A Grizzly 450 has independent rear on a mid size frame. Better ride than Kodiak.
Grizzly 680 would be a good choice also for full size and independent rear.

No matter what you look at try to find a machine that was owned by an older rider.

 

2-3000 dollars should get you a pretty nice machine

 

Agree... Also agree with try to buy one that was adult owned!

 

Honda Rancher should be easy to locate for a good price. I have personally seen them abused beyond comprehension and still run. Don't have all the fancies of the newer bikes but will be as reliable as any. Older Foremans would be a good choice as well.

That's ridiculous.

Keep in mind about independent rear suspension machines, that they will ride better than a solid rear axle machine, but if you want to tow anything, the solid rear axle will out perform the IRS all day long.
Also, trying to find any 4 stroke polaris sportsman under $3000 will be tough. It's definitely be extra cautious of you find one for under that.

Aren't all the full size quads in the last 10+ years IRS ?

Yeah, all new full sized utility quads have been IRS for a good 7 or more years.

Monkey see, monkey do, now they are all IRS. Some good points, some bad points about that.

 

That's a decent amount really, it's just how it does it. On our sportsman 500ho, I put my boat trailer, with ski nautique on it, and the rear end squats hard. It works, but I put the same trailer on my old solid axle bayou, and it doesn't squat.

 

I'm not planning on taking it down a hill with that 1500 pounds hooked to the back.
I'd say this is a flatlander rating.

I've probably had about 800 pounds in the cart behind the quad. tows it pretty well, but it doesn't steer well.
Even without the cart this machine understeers. Add the cart and its kind of annoying

Either way the IRS does all I ask of it and more, but I'm pretty conservative when towing with it,
I don't bounce like I used to...
