Waiting for the end of the joke here. I can, as long as there's a door in it.....or, I've got a Sawzall in hand.
No joke....unfortunately. I was just wondering why you can't run stovepipe horizontally through an interior wall? You can run through an exterior wall and up why not through a an interior wall and up? That's the path I need to go.
.... and up through floors to a roof penetration. Maybe it has to do with minimizing horizontal runs?
I can't provide anything useful on this. Did you happen to do a Web search and see what the NFPA regs read?
I'm basically drawing tho conclusion from my pellet stove install experience. When I first got a pellet stove I wanted to put it where I intend to put my Woodstock fireview. I want it in this location due to it being the center of the house. The stove will be placed against my dining room wall following clearances and the pipe will run through that wall and then up. If I dont do it this way the stove will be sitting in the middle of the dinning room. The room the pipe will run into and up is a pantry. I intend to build a chase around the pipe. When I tried doing this with the pellet stove and asked for advice in the forum, I was told it couldn't be done. As a newbie I didnt question it at the time. Now that I'm a bit more seasoned (or senile) I really dont see why I cant. I plan on doing it anyway....just wonder why it shouldn't be done as long as all safety clearances are met and I intend on exceeding them even.
I was not aware you could not do that so long as you use a regular thimble. But then, I've not seen anyone do this either so maybe there is something to it.
Perhaps some pics or a 2D sketch could help shed light on where safety concerns could be pointed out? How far horiz. are you looking to run?
yep it is a bid odd but I dont see why not. It looks pretty simple. The stove will be 12" from a firestop that is 1" from the wall. Through the wall with a thimble as you mentioned and cleanout tee up to the ceiling with a chase built around it, through the ceiling with appropriate firestop and isulation barrier then through the roof.
Sounds like you plan to do it right. You do need to be aware of horizontal run length, as I believe most only allow about 4' for optimal draft. Check with Woodstock.
I have no idea if it's ok, but it might be a good idea to check that home owners insurance and passing inspection?
I'm basically self insured. The horizontal run will only be maybe 18" at the most. Doesnt sound lime there is really any reason not to do it. As i said I was going to do it anyway just wondered why there was so much opposition 10 years ago when I wanted to do the pellet stove. Thanks for the input guys.
What is the size of the pantry? I am wondering if you could demo one/two of the walls and then run the stove pipe vertically; put some brick or stone veneer on the walls etc.
That is what I ended up using for my through the wall due to needing an offset more than the standard offset; I was able to meet the 3 inches inside for the Class A. There was no way to really slope that section and keep the chimney vertical.
No, I was just replying because they said to put a slope on it but I don't think that will be possible; unless I am confused about what you are doing.
Yes I see your point about trying to put it at an angle. The span is very short so trying to cheat it a little at the bottom could have bigger consequences at the top.
