Hello people, my Afton bay seems to be feeding to many pellets and they are very high in the pot, also the glass gets black in about 1 hour of burning . this only happens when I set it on #4 (because its friggin cold). any ideas on what's going on here. stove is a 07 model. thanks

How long have you owned the stove?

When was the last time the stove had a deep clean?

What is the venting set up (3 ft up, 2 ft over, and 4 ft up? Etc) And when was the last time it was cleaned?

Black glass and pellet pile up is a result of low air flow. Whether it's burn pot bypasses, clogged up/dirty stove, clogged/dirty exhaust, plugged oak, etc.

You need more air to burn the pellets. I'm guessing the flame is very lazy and sooty.

My thought is if it was all of a sudden? Is there is a bad gasket, dirty stove, or burn pot bypass. . Start by cleaning (impeller on combustion blower, back passages of stove, vent, termination cap, etc), followed by LBT, do dollar bill test on door and ash pan (if applicable), and make sure burn pot is setting in receptacle/cradle the proper way.

If it's not one of those 3 things? Then it may be something more serious (combustion motor is chitin the bed). After 9 years of use, any of the above is possible.

Remember to pound on the back wall to try and dislodge any junk that may be stuck up in there.

X2 Sounds like a serious blockage/lack of burn air. Make sure that when you turn it to #4, the exhaust fan makes the necessary increase in speed. Could be on the way out, as mentioned by Dex above??

Also, does it have an OAK? Check for blockage in screen outside? Remove OAK connection at rear of stove is simple way to check that, being so cold out.

Sounds like you are good to go for another 9 years then!!

The motor is a rare failure, but one that can't be ruled out!

Well its back to doing the same thing again , pellets stacking in the pot and lazy flame I am thinking control board may be the problem.

Check all wiring connections, terminals. Don't forget the neutral connection at the block above the Versa Grate motor. My manual mentions specifically to check the pins in the connectors, as they get displaced sometimes. Probably not the damper, since it did recover, but maybe it's icing up?

Also when everything is cleaned and repaired use a high quality softwood pellet . :handshake: Your stove will thank you for it .

Okay I tried many many things but the crappy burn continues. Is there a way to check the exhaust fan to make sure its at full output and how about the control board could it be overfeeding pellets??. I am at a loss here and glass is black and pellets continue to overfull pot. HELP!!!

woods.....you can try slapping an amp clamp on the motor lead and see when the comb. fan is full bore is the amp close to or at the amp rating of the motor.

I know you said the said the stove is clean but are you sure all the exhaust passages in the stove are? Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with your stove so I'm just throwing stuff out there.

I would also check your outside vent cap to feel or hear if there's much exhaust coming out .

To check for overfeeding, time the auger "on"time and "off" time. The correct times are in the manual i.e: level 3 auger should be on for 3.5 seconds, off for 8.
I suspect bad airflow. What does the flame look like?

Don't know if it was mentioned earlier in the thread, but double check gaskets on ash pan(?) and/ or door....use the dollar bill test on the door.
