Many good points above but I think there is the entry level man card and then the advanced versions. My list for the entry level would include:

Common curtesy and manners, know how to treat people both friends & foes.
By 18 he should know how to feed, clothe, and shelter himself. Get a job, a house or apartment, and basic cooking skills.
Basic technical skills, including home maintenance, car, and equipment/tools use & care.
Know when to walk away and when and how to stand up for oneself, friends, or strangers that need or deserve help. And how to tell the difference.

Most the other stuff just earns extra credit on the "advanced man card".

I would say #1 is to have respect and integrity! If you have those everything else will follow.

the hardest of life lessons are those we have endured first hand - if you don't learn from them...then shame on you.
It's hard to ever instill that specific life lesson on a 15-16yo.. remember most of us males were walking hormones at that time

true, big thing here is to convince him he CAN learn from other mistakes he does not need to go out and make them all himself. yeah I have often said and tried with him to give him some basics because once a teenage boys hormones go on.. their brain pretty much shuts off til 25 and you just hope they survive it..

Right now he has 17 YO. brother and 21 YO half brother doing nothing with their lives and he is more afraid of growing up and being a nothing than sweating to earn something.. he asked me what he needed to get a card... both brothers don't have one wants to beat them!
