Another blanket of snow fell in the meantime

 

lovely power outage in our region.
wifey was duly impressed at how little time it takes me to get the lights back on.

eh, i have been thinking the last few days it was time to run the genny anyway.

 

Got about 2" of fluffy snow last night, with a topping of about 1/10" of ice. I only shoveled the front deck & walk to the driveway. Went to work, huge rain storms in the afternoon & 52* temps.....snow is all gone....... WOOHOO!!!

 

Had a hezz of a cold going for Valentines day. Spent Sat. night, Sun., and Mon. in front of the e2 loaded with Blazers and Sets. Today went to work still feeling kinda crappy. Loooonnnnggggg day bro. Hope you feel better soon Better to take a day and try to get better than battle every day a feel bad and underperform for a week. At least that's what I told by bud/boss today.

Of particular concern yesterday was my current greenhouse, my first version was made with PVC pipes. We had gotten about 9 inches when the rains came. Although quite a bit of the snow had just slid off, I still had to help the rest of it off, just for peace of mind. It was getting heavy, but the ridge board and laminated trusses had no trouble spreading the load. I had constructed it with the same construction techniques that I had seen in harbor towns when I was sailing. An inexpensive way to shelter boat projects. The top pic was my creating just after I had put the special greenhouse plastic on it. The bottom pic is what I had copied.

The storm finished with another 4 inches last night. So far so good!

 

That's to my neighbor who came over and plowed my driveway!!! For years I would help him as he only had a snow blower. Last year he had enough and bought a plow for his new truck. I was suppose to back the wife's car out for her this morning. It's AWD but the four inches of snow and the town trucks plowing in the bottom of the drive were a bit intimidating for her. Here's to good neighbors!

my neighbor got lung cancer a couple years back. he is doing amazingly well all things considered. the chemo worked when it looked like he might only have weeks left, and he is out on the ice and sledding with his friend who comes up weekly.
long short, i use his snowblower and do both our drives. well, the other neighbor has a plow and he will do tony's drive most times. i just try and gauge it based on if tony needs to leave somewhere in a short time frame, or for other factors.
jason with the plow also keeps the berms left by the town plows cleared at the bottom of our drives.
and even when he does plow tony's drive, i will finish it with the shovel where he can't reach.
i have the garage door clicker to tony's place so i can get to the snowblower whenever i'm ready.

the thing is like 12 years old though and needs some attention. it's being sent off to the shop soon.
it's a toro 10hp model with the hardened gearbox so it doesn't need shear pins.
i'm definitely looking at a toro when we get ready to buy.

it all works out really well here in our little enclave.
i'll even feed tony's cat when he goes places he can't take her along.

and my wife bakes for the neighbors too.
her carrot cake with cream cheese icing is exceptional.

 

I helped my best buddy build a boat shed exactly like that about 6 years ago. Didn't have any gable walls tho. Had a jig set-up to do the double strapping & 2x4 spacer ribs. Unbelievably strong.

 

Did the warsh yesterday when it was doing whatever, this morning I spread sand on the driveway next to the house where there was still some ice.

Went down to get yesterday's mail, in it was a bill from a visit the boss made last May. You don't have to wander too much about why the docs are showing insurance companies the door and your medical costs are going through the roof.

I wrote a check out for $18.00 and the stuff is sitting in the mail box awaiting today's pick up.

 

The commercial greenhouses are about $2500 and up. The first PVC greenhouse cost less than $800 and lasted 7 years before a freak snow storm finally broke the back. This one cost about the same, but is solid. The weak link is the plastic covering it. I wasn't worried about the framing. I had ripped the strapping from Amish milled wood. A 2 x 12 is actual size: 2" x 12". I also made a jig and repeated the same construction of the trusses. So my costs were even more effective. The spacing blocks were left over scrap. I did frame in both ends, sheathing the northside. The intent is to insulate the northside and double wall the inside also. The beds are raised with insulation around the perimeter, and 4 inch pipe under the soil. The idea is to blow the heat from the peak down under the soil and allow it to radiate during the night for extended growing season.

 

Too late I got it too... I just don't whine about it.
