Although I am not sold on spending $$ for high efficiency, I am looking to spend a little more for direct vent. From what I have been reading about power vents, they have a use in certain situations but I have had all of the issues that make them a last resort only option. In 1994, they might have been a popular technology to save money, but too many issues have made them unwanted by almost all heating techs and overall you dont save anything-you probably spend more.

    • Noisy-yup
    • Black staining on the house around exhaust-yup
    • Oil fume smells at time in the house even when running properly-yup
    • Can break down and stop the burner-yup
    • Expensive-yup
    • More maintenance-yup
    • Current units will last maybe 7-10 years on the motor
If a new power vent setup can run 700 plus for a better unit and a direct vent boiler is equal or even as much as double that to get rid of the power vent, it will be cheaper in the long run.

The less of mechanicals the better. Hope it works out for you. Come to think of it, mine is a direct vent installed in 1993. No problems yet, sshh!

Temp's were predicted to be -2 last night. The 8 pound terrorist needed to go out at 3AM, temp was -15. She took about five steps and did her thing on the cement patio :picard:and scrambled back to the door. The temp had risen to -9 at 4:30 when I got up, add a wind of about 10 and the wind chill is ...dang it's ca ca ca coooold!

So to help get the kitchen warmed up, I fired up the cookstove. While I was doing that I thought of throwing some of those horse bedding pellets in an empty orange juice container! In fact I filled a couple of them, it worked as well as the kindling wood. Another use for them, only a few more tons to get rid of.

There are some interesting double condensing oil fired boilers on the market that do not have that poor power vent unit in the exhaust stream, it is in the air intake side of the burner, 95%+ on the efficiency and the vent is pvc if I remember correctly.

Have no idea on the costs but they are easy on the oil side.

Well, I'm glad to have full gas tanks for the next couple of days. Already have 2 warnings from the Nat. Weather Srvc. :shiver::shiver:

The "bright" side of the forecast starts on Tues.:

    • * IMPACTS... WIND CHILLS WILL REACH DANGEROUS TO POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING LEVELS. FRIGID TEMPERATURES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO RESULT IN FROZEN PIPES... FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.

      * WINDS... NORTHWEST 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH.

      * TEMPERATURES... 5 BELOW TO 20 BELOW BY SATURDAY NIGHT
    * WIND CHILL READINGS... AS LOW AS 25 BELOW TO 40 BELOW.
    • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WIND CHILL WARNING MEANS THE COMBINATION OF VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL CREATE DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILL VALUES. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA OR DEATH IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.

Here's a few pics from our Tech's. Apparently, mice, squirrels etc. love our equipment.

whoa, what a mess! Reminds me of a commercial I saw this morning. A guy hanging in a hammock of wires from a ceiling, the discussion was about the possibility that he might cause a collapse of the whole network. The other tech set a candy bar on the floor to entice the other guy out of the hammock. Maybe he should have thrown the snake in your photo up there.

You'd get a like out of the outside wiring in India.
