While we're at it... Cottonwood? Thought was ash when I first saw it, but the bark is a bit gnarlier than I'm used to.
No, not ash... cottonwood/poplar to me, too. Would be much easier if you could get the information Guantanamo Bay style... "Common name, species and moisture contact, biatch... or you get the saw!"
I think it's going to stay where its at. It didn't leave the furry edge when I cut it, so wanted a second opinion. Odd blowdown. It barberchaired itself off the stump. I'll have to snap a pic when I'm back there again.
If it's easy to get take it. It's good shoulder wood, and we all know that this year we used more shoulder wood than typical years. You never know if you'll need more shoulder wood to save the good stuff for really cold temps. You can always burn it outdoors in the fire pit.
While the old saying, waste not, want not could apply here I tend to leave the less desirable where they lay. Plenty of other wood to cut. If I could get some good frozen ground I have a pignut and a couple honey locust waiting for me to come get them. I just find it hard to spend time on poplar or silver maple when there's better to be had. I cut up some basswood last year because it was handy thinking it'd be good for the fire pit...mistake! Haha!
