I got this picture sent to me asking if I wanted the wood. I'm no firewood snob, but I really don't need any more shoulder season wood for a couple years. What do you guys and gals think it may be? The tree is approximately 22" across at the cut. I'm leaning that it's a maple of some sort from the bark, but truly don't know. Thanks!
No thorns, and no other pic's. Dang it! The difference in the color of heartwood is baffling me. I've asked how it cut... hot knife through butter or a slow hard cut. Trying to determine anything I can, but haven't gotten a response. Thanks for the input RCBS!!
Without thorns I would want to say some form of Hickory based on the dark heartwood, but you folks may have some varieties over yonder that I'm not used to seeing. That bark and orange heartwood sure does look like some Honey locust I've cut before. I like this game!
sure is a dead ringer for this pic I pulled of google images of HL: http://www.hearth.com/talk/attachments/image-jpg.114971/
There's only 2 of us playin' the game! I'm not toooooo far away from you RCBS! For some reason I can't open the link. I did just get this new laptop with windows 10, and I struggle with it about as much as tree ID.
Welcome to the game Fanatical1! I was leaning mapleish from the bark, I also can definitely see the locustish in it too. I guess I just need to hook up the trailer and get over to load it up. If I don't get it, that stuff is going in a ditch! Both speculations so far are high BTU stuff. I know it's tough to say from the limited info I've got for reference. Appreciate your thoughts and insight.
Maple. I'd say Red Maple because I have cut several Red Maples that look just like this tree, but I'll admit I am not familiar enough with Sugar Maple. Either one is good firewood. Take it.
Looks alot like red maple. Also looks like the heart wood might be starting to rot. Round here that's what it looks like when the tree is infested with carpenter ants.
Our Reds bark is smoother than that here. Probably because they don't get much past 15-16" dbh. go smell it.
kinda stumped bark is thick which would lead me towards a hickory species. the heartwood is close to what you'd see in a large sweetgum as well no discernible patterns either way, stumped tree
Ain't there some old leaves on the ground near that tree? Sometimes you can see some telling signs in the leaf buds on dormant trees.
There is about a dozen Honey Locust hybrids out there that don't produce thorns. Some don't even produce the pods. Just sayin'. Nearly all of the urban ones I've seen are the thornless varieties.
Thanks everyone for chiming in! I'm going to go get it Sunday morning and post a few more pic's then. I'll check for buds and old leaves also. To be continued! I agree with you, Oldman47, It may be hung up. It will be chunked into odd size pieces laying on the ground when I get there Sunday morning. Appreciate the safety notice for sure!
There wasn't a leaf to be found when we went to load up. Just cut in odd lengths. Here's all I could get to help. The heart wood is very hard and solid. Got about 2/3's of a cord of the stuff. I just couldn't wait till tomorrow!
