    Hello everyone,

I'm continuing to plan my hearth construction for an Ideal Steel stove. Based on the measurements and clearances given in the Ideal Steel manual, I've marked where I want the stove to sit so it has the proper distance from the back corner to the walls (it's a corner hearth).

The next step is to install the ceiling support box in the ceiling. We went with DuraVent. I'd like to go straight up from the top, without any bends, as I know that's the best.

I'm wondering if someone who has an Ideal Steel can help me with a measurement, as I don't have the stove here yet and Woodstock is closed right now. I'm looking for the distance from the very back of the stove to the center of the flue pipe so I can know where to install the ceiling support box to line up. I know it might be off a little but I'd like to get it as close as possible to where I planned the stove to sit. The picture in the manual shows that the flue is near the back, but there is no measurement given that I can see. Thanks!

Will you be getting a rear heat shield?

Best I can measure (it is really hot right there) is 4.5 inches or 4 5/8 inches. This is for the top vent, not rear vent. The heat shield adds about another inch.

Rear heat shield doesn't come into play with a corner install.

I'm getting 5 inches. Wish this was posted yesterday when I had the pipe detached to sweep the chimney.

The top plate is 10 inches. The flue is in the center. If you need a more exact measurement I'd wait till tomo and call or hope someone has their stove apart.

Thanks guys! Don't burn yourselves. Are these measurements that you did to approx the center of the flue if I'm understanding you right?

    Yessir.

The stove collar can be put on 2 different ways though. Maybe that's why we have different measurements

    Center of the flue.
The connector that came with the stove has the extended slope toward the glass, not toward the back.

Horizontal venting to a tee does give you a couple advantages too. For one it may make cleaning the flue much easier with a cleanout available and bottom up cleaning if you desire. Plus it frees up some surface on the stovetop and creates another 'burner'. Just throwing that out there. Of course if you want the stove as close as possible to the back, then vertical venting allows that.
