My daughter has a house with a fireplace. The city inspected the old chimney and said it needed to be lined to reused. I came up with some ways we could do theverything lining but she wasn't too interested in actually using it to burn wood in. She saw an idea on the web that I helped build for he for Christmas. It's a three sided box, 27"x29"x5,5" that sits inside of the fireplace opening. To make it look a bit nicer and cover the gap between the box and fireplace I framed it with some large casing. Then I cut random size branches to 5" in length that she anchored though the back of the box. I also built a small box to set in amongst the wood that holds a flameless candle. Its a piece of birch with a depression drilled out for a flame less candle. She did the final assembly and painting and is really happy with it.
What a neat idea. Stops the drafts and is also decorative. My grandmother did a needlepoint screen to cover up their fireplace but this is quite appropriate for a firewood hoarders daughter.
I was gonna' suggest a fire mural in there, but wut-ev. That's really ingenious. I like that she used a flameless candle....had me worried for a second.
"I cut random size branches to 5"...." With your bare hands right schlot? That turned out great- and you don't have to bring farwood over every few weeks.....
Thanks everyone. I've had a hard time connecting with her lately, so doing this was a lot of fun. ....and Eric VW, of course!
