I was surprised how much we got. That ash I cut up and was hoping to get Saturday will be sitting for a long time now. Sets them back a month or two getting the new fence done too. They can't even get out yet on 456 which runs along the ridge of the mountain west of Mercersburg.

Does wood dry buried in snow banks? Serious question as my stacks are normally buried December to March ...

I feel your pain that's a lot of work with a tractor and loader glad your out. I only had to clear a few hundred feet yesterday with the loader just to get hay to the cows, I got so aggravated if anyplace would have been open and I could have gotten there I think I would be the owner of a new 3 point hitch blower.:picard: Can't really justify it though as I only need it maybe once a year.

Yeah, a FEL is just a big shovel - not ideal for the big storms but it beats a regular shovel!

I have no idea, cant imagine with wood at or below freezing in the pile that it would loose much moisture??? But having said that, cant imaging my stuff in the burn stack, which is under cover, is much above freezing either. My guess is that wood below freezing isn't losing much moisture. Frozen wood is easier to split which I think is because of the interior freeze also.

What a crazy winter this has been. It's 40 degrees and raining here today; and I could smell a little bit of spring in the air. Its looking like I should have restocked the front porch with pine instead of ash. If this keeps up I might have to get my maples tapped this weekend.

If it does, it would be very little. Why? No air circulation. Normally wood will dry in the winter months. Not as fast as it will during summer but it does dry. If not, those folks up in the Yukon and Alaska would have some big problems. I'm thinking bogydave has done some testing with moisture content up there in AK.

Thanks Dennis, my (granted limited) experience my wood takes longer to dry than most people talk about. My 2 year plus CSS Elm is still around 22%. I haven't cut a live elm I remember... But if in snow bank slows drying could explain a lot. While in summer sunny spot and I always have wind not uncommon to have 80% humidity. This also could slow drying amount. Wood that will be used goes on raised covered deck open to wind.

Maybe could have run plow truck every couple of hours but it was so windy think I would have ended up in the same place with all the drifting

High 30s today so a little melt is on

As long as you're never really stranded for too long... it's kind of an adventure being deep snowed in, isn't it. That's what it was like 120 years ago with every big snow storm. I remember it well... ;):D

Wood will still dry in high humidity areas. Of course it will take longer. Also in areas that get high rainfall, it is best to top cover immediately after stacking the wood and also give the stacks a bit more room underneath. It's still about air circulation!
