I have a Drolet to and I load and crack door till the wood is chard or 350-450 on pipe and close door, then push damper in 1/3 each time every 15 min or so till the last one then push all the way in and back out 1/2 inch or less. The pipe temp will be from 350-450 in around that. The top and sides will get around 650-700+. I would not do the damper, check your book that came with it to see if you need to. I would say yours is heating just fine.

tigeroak thanks for info. The sides of my stove are in 400 range and the far left and right of stove top is usually 50 to 100 degrees different. So I guess everything is going good.

If your adding four splits to a hot stove right on top of coals it can get hot real fast , you have to be right on top of it and dial it down pretty quick .
I do that sometimes but only a couple splits at a time, otherwise ,pull coals forward and pack the wood tight together N/S , then the wood will only burn in front ,from there it will burn front to back .
Even with your 3.7 cf fire box you should be able to control it ,packing it full and tight , but not if your trying to fill it with a 400 degree stove, right on top of a bed of coals

HDRock thanks for the tip. I'll try to reload when cooler and try the ash forward method you described. I'll let u guys know how it turns out in a couple of days.
