This is my FIL setup thst he has burned for over 35 years. Been feeding it in the morning and at night since we dont allow him down into the basement anymore. He can afford to burn propane but it makes him feel better to burn wood. Small thing to keep him happy.

I'm glad that when the time comes, I'm not the guy that has to remove it.

Did a handful of those and its no fun.

    Beep, bork, boop, baaap!

Do you feel dirty after cleaning or loading the lower chamber?:D

Or do you tell it to turn its head and cough before you load it?

It says it is a Holland AfterBurner. I think he got it out of a old schoolhouse. Not sure but I think he did the sheet metal enclosing it. The very bottom door is the ash clean out and the little door above it was for humidifying the air. The very top is for the wood filling. It might have been a coal heater at one time?
The copper lines are a natural convection loop for pre-heating his DHW and runs to a 75 gal. tank setting next to the heater. It has no functioning draft control but runs just fine with what air is drawn in around the ash door.
He has always kept ahead on his wood with usually a winters worth stacked in his basement and a couple years worth stacked outside. My MIL can go downstairs to feed it during the day but we try to do that if we can. He is to weak now with his chemo that the girls have prohibited him from going down in the basement. Not only afraid of him falling but also that he might fall and knock my MIL down also.

Good description and good on you for helping the inlaws. I've never seen a unit like this and was thinking it was a coal burner with some radiator lines.

There's a similar (now defunct) unit in my neighbor's house, which they rent. There's a decent sized (empty) coal room down there too....
They asked me if I wanted to dismantle it for the scrap....
    Negative.

    And you are absolutely right!
I wouldn't look forward to it even if I had help. But if I did have help, it would be the only way I would do it.
I better shut up before I jinx myself and get sent to a house with one that needs to be ripped out!

Just one day (friday) last week. back to work tomorrow. I predict it will happen soon, by the end of the month-ish.
I was laid off from another job (temporary DNR Parks and Watercraft) this end of summer, but after one week off, I got a call from a former workmate (now a boss) to come in and help out. i enjoy it, just not as much as I used to...?
The DNR will contact me next month to find out if I am returning or not. Haven't decided, actually.

    Are you keeping busy driving?

I average 2-3 days a week. They asked me to commit to Wednesday's every week. I have a feeling it could be more by spring. I'll have to decide when the time comes............Now that the bride is retired, I enjoy being home more now........I definitely could never go back to 5 day weeks.

Tell them you'll be glad to commit to Wednesdays as long as you're not doing something else that day...
