They do get pretty large and we have some. Like growing near creeks and such but not very good for wood when they go. Pretty stringy to split. Here's our biggest single close to 5 ft in diameter now. There's a creek on the other side of the truck so it sucks up the water. Leaf from it. Still a real healthy tree to say the least.
Wow, that thing sure is huge! Looks like you may have given it a bit of a lean when you hugged it too!
It may have been trying to get away from him.....since wood gets turned into fire by some members here
I just know they are not common in Wisconsin. Our tree map for the state shows there's at least 1 in my county, but none in the county I have my land that I cut on. Yeah, not that common here, and only on extreme southern Wisconsin. At least naturally.
Well, I did just step out of a Restaurant after eating a big Bbq. Onion Ring Cheeseburger and Fries! Hiccup.
Sycamore is the largest hardwood in the east. There are some giants out there. Tulip Tree grows taller, but Sycamore gets quite tall and also very large in diameter. I haven't burned Sycamore so I cant comment on the firewood quality, but I bet you'd get a lot of firewood from some of the Sycamores I have seen.
