    That reminds me of an architectural feature I remember seeing on a lot of homes in Michigan's Upper Peninsula when I was younger. A lot of folks burned wood for heat, and the Finnish immigrants brought along a tradition of permanently installing ladders on the roof so they could get quick access to the chimney.
