Oh, you clicked, caught another! No, seriously, I haven't fished in a long while and have no gear fit for an adult. Freshwater is where we will start. I got my daughter a pole for Christmas and she is dying to cast into a real pond. Our current fishing gear constitutes of: (1) pink princess pole (2) clueless wannabe fish-ahs What's a decent setup for me for now? I am pretty sure I could take a trip to a local place, but maybe there is a decent rod/ reel that won't kill the wallet and will work for a while for me?
I think a Zebco 33 reel would be good for a newbe. Me and my friends used them when we were teens and they still sell them. I still have mine. I'm not sure about poles though. I wish I could find the pic of my daughter when she was young. She caught a 12" small mouth bass on one of those little kids pole. Good luck and http://www.amazon.com/Zebco-33-Auth...=UTF8&qid=1451927169&sr=8-3&keywords=zebco+33
I musta been the last one in line or something when I was a kid, 'cause I started out with a hook/line/sinker combo on a stick. Seriously.....a stick. Caught my first Carp with that getup at Point Mouillee.
A lot of times you can find a decent set up used on Craigslist or other classified listings. Do you have access to Uncle Henry's in your area?..............
Wally world has good combination spin rod set ups for reasonable prices. Grab some hooks and bobber for the princess, and some small black jig heads and soft bodies for perch, sunfish and bass for you. Great times fishing with little ones. You realize how much catching a few little fish can make someone's day.
Any combo from your local sporting goods stores or walmart will be enought to start on. Pick your poison, spinning or spin-cast. For spin-cast I think the Zebco 33 is about the best. For spinning Shimano makes good stuff, and I've been happy with the few cheaper Shakespeare reels I've had. The rods won't really matter for pond fishing. Chances are, you'll be rebaiting the hook so much for your daughter that you won't have much time to fish anyway.
In all seriousness, you may want to consider using barbless hooks until she learns some finer points of control. When she (or anyone around her) gets stuck with a hook...it will happen, it will be much easier to remove. Just hoping she doesn't start her collection of piercings!!
I would recommend an Ugly Stick with your choice of reel. They are tough and priced reasonably. I take mine when I take the boys fishing. I'm not known to be easy on stuff and with the boys with me its worse.
Not a bad idea. I've been using circle hooks with my daughter. I think they're a little safer than traditional "J" hooks, and it helps to take some of the guesswork out of when to set the hook.
