Hello folks, I just joined and want to say hello. I have been reading the tremendous amount of information on this site and decided to sign up. I live near Poughkeepsie NY and have been heating with wood since 1979. I enjoy all aspects of being self-sufficient and heating with wood. I love being out in the woods, enjoying nature, the challenges of being self-sufficient, contributing to the use of renewable resources and working with people who have the same values and interests. For the most part, I get my firewood from people who are removing a tree or two from their yard or clearing land for a new house. When I have had to purchase wood, I buy 8-10 cords in log lengths. Recently I had someone drop of 20 cords of ash, hickory and red oak simply to clear a site for a new house, delivered to my yard free. I built my own hydraulic splitter in 1981 and has processed MANY cords over the years. I am pretty well setup with all the equipment needed to process logs into firewood and LOVE doing so. Most of my friends and relatives think I am crazy to heat with wood in the "modern-age" but to me there is nothing like coming home to a warm house which is heated due to one's initiative. I have found firewood to be tremendously addictive. You can never have too much firewood, at one time I had 40 cords split stacked and covered. I am down to about 10 cords now. You can never have too many wood processing tools also. I am currently shopping for a new chain saw. Jim
Thanks GrJfer, I see in your signature you own a Stihl MS250 saw. I just picked up a used 250. It looks like the bar oiler has no adjustment. I am curious as to how much oil the saw uses to a tank of gas. My 250 has about a quarter tank of bar oil left when it has run out of gas. What is your experience with the MS250? Many Thanks and Happy Holidays!!!! Jim
Thanks for your response GrJfer. I'll be using it again all day Sunday prepping a load of firewood for a good friend who is down on his luck. Jim
Welcome NYJim Nice to meet ya, what took ya so long? Driven past Poughkeepsie most of my life to our cabin in the Catskills! Love it up that way! Merry Christmas to you, sir!
Welcome NYJim Sounds like you have some serious wood addiction! I think you found the right place to hang out! Like others have said we like pictures so feel free to share, even if its just a squirrel on top of your stacks. Nice to meet you and merry belated Christmas to you and your loved ones... even if its a day late.
Hi Jim, 20 cords, dropped round for free would be amazing. You're obviously a bloody good bloke if you have friends doing that for you so I'm sure (from my limited experience of the forum) that you will fit in very well! Welcome and Season's greetings.
Welcome to FHC NYJim ... this is the most amazing family of folks you'll find on the web who love the outdoors, heating with wood and enjoy telling our stories. Merry Christmas...
Welcome aboard Jim, enjoy the ride here!...........................................:stacke:.................................
