Lol.. I'll never forget driving across 40 for the first time.. I remember seeing the tallest cross in the Western Hemisphere? I think that's what it was. At the time, that was my first trip west of the Mississippi south of Nebraska.
When I lived in Amarillo, TX in the late '80's; I described it to my friends as the "Armpit of the USA", or the "biggest truck stop between Dallas and Denver"!!! Doing what I do now for a living, I would like it down there a whole lot more..................except for the heat, snakes, people that can't drive in any sort of snow, poor taste in beer, and too close to Mexico.
Winter of '87-'88 we got a blizzard of around 16" of snow...................and of course drifts because of the perpetual 15mph (at least) winds. Shut Amarillo down for about 3 days. The 4th day, it was 70*F and all the snow melted!!! I had my cross-country skis with me when I was down there.......... no one had ever seen them before. I had the skis prior, and had made a couple trips to Albuquerque just to do some cross-country skiing while living down there. I used them to go to the store for some essentials during that time.
Many, many folks comment on this cross. You can see it for miles. Very nice and if anyone drives along I-40, they should stop there. Get pictures.
