Not that I'm a overly experienced wood cutter by any means but after reading this thread I have learned a couple things I wouldn't have known otherwise. I was a 1 saw kinda guy, figured it could do all the work (usually bucking grapple loads) I ran across.
The 20" bar on my Husky 455 works ok but struggles on oak and hickory. After seeing Dex with his new toy (saw I mean) it brought me to thinking if I used the 20" bar on a stronger saw and dropped the 455 down to maybe a 16" bar I may do better having both on hand vs running with one with a longer bar.

I've only owned Husqvarna so I can't compare it to anything else, and its done good with what I needed it for.
What size saw would get me another 10cc or so and not kill the bank for bucking maybe 10 cord/year using a 20" bar?

I had a 455 Rancher and it came with a 20". Worked well, but I put a 16" bar on it and it really woke it up :) Less load, more speed.

If you have a 455 Rancher, then a Husq 365 or Husq 570 would be a good step up to run 24" bar, or go all out and get a used 372xp. There is a nice one for the same price as a Rancher now on another site ($425).

Get the 372!! You won't believe how much saw it is. Although heavier you will run it all the time. It will cut circles around that rancher!! Literally 2x as fast.

Sell the Rancher. Not what you're looking to hear but here is why.

It's a good saw with a decent reputation. Reliable, reasonably powerful for it's displacement. But it's ridiculously overweight for what it is. If it's in good cosmetic shape, you shouldn't have too much trouble recouping a fair portion of your initial purchase. Don't forget that we might have a member or two here looking for a smooth running saw to handle firewood chores.... ;)

The weight thing is what drives my "Sell It" advice. You're going to eventually buy a 70cc saw to run that 24" bar in the hardwoods. When you do, you'll realize that there is little reason to pick up the 455 anymore other than just to exercise it. Then you will be on the hunt for a 50cc machine to take care of the smaller stuff. (the disease progressives to far more advanced stages but lets not go scaring the public.... ) So save yourself the $40-$50 (or more) that it would cost to downsize you 455 to a 16" bar. Get your 70cc saw and use the 455 as is if you like. Then trade it in on a 50cc model like the 545, 550XP, or a Stihl MS261. I heard that Dex got a steal of a deal on a new Jonsered 2253 too. ;) Same saw as the 550XP, just a slightly different look in different colors.

As far as a 70cc recommendation, the 365 is going to be a lot of bang for the buck and will run a 24" bar with excellence. I like other saws in that size/weight range a bit better but they cost $200 more as well.

Mr MasterMech, Nice 3500 chevy! Looks like a great workhorse. Backup lights wook great at night or when loading up your trailer with the tractor. 3500 series means strong chassis. Just maintain her and she will last for years. I like the big block chevys, more torque..........

Factory specs for the 454 were only 240HP. But 430+lb feet of torque I believe. And all that torque is in by 1800 RPM. (HP peak is only 3600 RPM as well, it's basically a tractor engine.... ) Took diesel pickups quite awhile to match that. :D

    7-800 -- more for stihl

My local TSC has the 2166 (70cc) for 699 right now -- seems I've seen it for 669.

Here is one for $475 shipped. And this is pre X torque (most prefer this one).
    http://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/husqvarna-372xp.249555/

To keep things cheaper, you can use the Rancher as your 50th saw (it is In the 50th class) and just but a 70cc saw. The saw listed is from a reputable person, as are most on there that sell.

I bought a cheap 16" Forestor bar and chain for my 455. I think it was about $35 shipped with a free chain.

The bars won't swap from the 455 to the 372, but I have a 20" Bar I would send you. Then you just need a 24" for the bigger jobs.

The 365 is the same as a 372 and if buying new I'd take MM advice. It takes some mod to be the same performance wise but its close.

But honestly I'd get the used one on AS the 372 is probably the most notitable husky saw! And pre x torque is a more power full saw.

Talk to Tlandrum . You'll get a good deal , and great advice from him . He sells J'red and Husqvarna saws . He's a real stand up guy ,and won't steer you wrong .
    Me personally, I'd look at a 562xp,or Jred 2260 from him . Ported of course . :) They'd handle a 20-24" bar with authority.
Don't skip over the Ms441 or 461 . Great saws as well .

The reason I didn't push the 441/461, is that they are going to be $900 saws. The 365 is a $700 machine and will more than handle the 24" bar. I like the 562XP too but it's not my first choice for full-time 24" duty in hardwood. You could always have it ported but then it loses any price advantage over a 70cc machine. Sure is a smooth, easy handling machine however.

Thanks fellas, lots to think about and look at. I'd be weird about buying used, just something inside of me not knowing enough about the saws that would bother me. New would be great but the price tag would be a deal breaker at this time of the year. As with other retail items and certain times of the year being cheaper to buy, do the saws have a time that they may not be in demand as much and sold a little less expensive? I've only been to saw shops locally to me so online would all be new too.
    thanks in advance!

Saws don't budge much from retail. If u. Got a buddy there then u can do good. But saws are like guns there is not much profit there and there is only so far they can go.

End of January when it's cold with snow on the ground no one is thinking about spring but have already spent their money on generators and snow blowers so the local shops are pretty quiet -- seems like the best time for finding a deal...

(and before people get their tax refunds)

Terry Landrum could make you a good deal on new. The Jonsered 2166 (Husq 365 but in Red) would be a great machine. Send him a PM. As his prices are so low that he can't post them.

+1 on talking to Terry about that 2166. I love it when folks support their local dealers but if you need the tool and price is the issue......

You should be able to get into a 365/2166 for under $600. I don't know if you'll be getting a bar at that price though. A used dolmar/makita 6400/1 isn't a bad choice either.

My local stihl dealer will usually knock almost 10% off every saw I've priced there. I do a lot of parts business with them and stuff but they treat me well. A 441 was $760 with a 20".

I can get close to that on a larger saw just by asking.

I been debating buying new saws and parting them and was asking about discount and was getting close to that on the cheap saws which they basically give away. The big ones have more room on them.
