We planted a bunch of trees in our back field about 10 years ago. This year we decided to harvest one. It's about 13' or so tall. This is how I got it onto the deck:
That is nice. We cut trees off our own place for many, many years. Sadly, we can't find a good one this year so may have to break down and buy one. We do have several that will make good trees in another 2-3 years but until then...
Dennis, I've taken down a slightly smaller tree, then cut off the top 3-6 feet and used that. Just something to think about,.....nah, you've probably already done that.
My dad used to get 2 trees and drill and add limbs to one from the other and we always had a nice tree....
I had handy members in our family that used to do that as well. Or moved branches from the back to the front so the tree would sit back in the corner better.
Here is a pic of our tree, it's field grown, not shaped, out back of a local farm. They charge ten bucks and you put the money in a steel box bolted to a pole. None of the trees are perfect and all have a bad side. But the thrill is in the hunt, and it's out in the woods. Like Charlie Brown said, you just need to give it a little love!
I was just reminded on Wed on our way to town that "next Monday you've got to go out and find a tree." There is a high voltage line right of way a few miles off where we go with the bike and help keep the line clear. Not perfect but like Milleo mentioned - drill, pruner and sharp knife - bingo ready to decorate. Price is right and get some of that free fresh air too.
Got a balsam off the hydro right of way. The tree inspector says its ok. If we have to I will get another, drill some holes and add branches in the sparse areas just like Milleo's dad used to do. We'll put it up Tuesday and start decorating. What an enjoyable tradition at this most special time.
So here is our tree. Normally the dollhouse sits where the tree is right now. I tried taking pics without the flash but it didn't turn out that well. We had an earthquake in the doll house and I didn't get the lamp stood up again. My grandfather made the cedar chest for me and many, many years ago made the doll house for my mother. The angel on top was on my parents first Christmas tree. The cross stitched tree skirt was made by our oldest daughter for us.
