Weather has been mild up here in Sask. for the most part. Actual winter came along last night, but could be worse. If I had to wager a guess I'd say 3/4 of a cord since mid October.
The wife has been bumping on the oil forced hot air furnace on most mornings for ten or fifteen or so and the shuts it off.
Very southwest corner. Around new buffalo area. We got a dusting this morning then the sun came out. We're supposed to get more this evening.
Sky spit out some little tiny snow balls earlier today . They are saying less than a half inch here. Do you get a lot of lake effects snow there ?
Yes we usually do if the winds set up right. Sometimes we're close enough to the lake though that they jump over us and end up in the next county inland.
Ground is white right now. It's been white a couple times today but the ground is not yet frozen so it won't stay. Snowing pretty good right now.
Getting a fire going in the mornings and letting it die at night. Had a few flurries today, just enough to make the ground white but it is mostly gone now. Temps overnight in the teens in the La Crosse, WI area. Looking like a brown Christmas.
Just brought in my 4th face cord yesterday, so I've burned 3 so far. The stove has been burning steady since October. In the 20's today but sunshine. Still no snow, light dustings but nothing is staying. Not typical for this neck of the woods.
Burned through over 2 cords here. The ground has not been white yet, but there is a (slim) chance of that tomorrow. Loggers are having trouble getting loads off the landings because it hasn't frozen. Our cows will come back from the far pasture tomorrow - we've been able to keep them watered most days so far using a pipe on top of the ground (fill tubs at night before it freezes). The pipe will get drained and stored, and we'll get them onto their winter ground and waterer. Still have 3 cord of CSS under tin roofing that needs to come in for April/May burning. On the plus side I've been able to get caught up on a lot of other work that would have been much less pleasant if it were more seasonable. Hope we get a solid freeze before snow cover so I can get around the woods without tearing things up.
So, brought in the last of the fall SS Maple this morning. Been burning a little Ash and Oak on the colder days/nights too. Now, let's see how far I can get on the 2/3 cord of Oak before getting back into the Maple. With the cold coming, that will probably only get me to mid Feb., if that. It's not a problem, as there's a bunch more behind it.
In warm weather my undersized stove can almost heat the house. In cold weather the electric heat has to assist. That means I can burn full bore even when the weather isn't cold, and I think I am more or less on track with burning the amount of wood I expect to burn. I have burned a cord or so this winter, mostly Red Maple.
Winter is finally starting to arrive in New England, we are ramping up the burning here. Winter is a wonderful state of mind.
I burned 2 so far and will probably burn another 2. Last year I burned every bit of the 5.25 cords my shed holds before we started breaking up the furniture.
I've burned about a cord and 3/4ish. Keeping the house a little warmer than actually needed and letting some out into the garage. Pretty much on par with what I burn in a normal year. Just didn't warm the garage like I am this year. I figure its more beneficial than letting it put the window!
What kind of wood is the couch made of? Needless to say we didn't actually burn the furniture but I did cut down a long dead and dry cherry in my snow shoes and then a couple of standing dead elms to make it to warmer weather last year.
Very nice setup Dave! Warm is not the right term crazy winter is more like it.... One day is -10 wind chill the next is 40F! you can probably hear my bones cracking all the way to your place!
