....it's been so Damm mild here this fall/winter, I've barely gone through 1/2 cord of wood yet. Un-freaking-believeable. I'm usually into my second cord by now, it's crazy. I haven't even lit my Napoleon 1900p in the kitchen one single time this entire burning season.... So on the bright side, my wood stores are only growing.....on the bad side, I'm almost out of places to stack it!!
Here too. Had maybe two fires that were full loads, everything else has been shoulder season type burns. Last year came late and stayed so not counting my chickens just yet.
Yes Sir, unreal it is. Makes one wonder when Mother Nature's other shoe is going to drop as papadave said it in a past post.
Yep, same here. Haven't lit a fire yet. Wood needs more dry time anyway. Oil is cheap right now. Win/win... for now...
We are hoping that we won't need much of our locust and mulberry and that we can put it right back outside for next year. Wait, does it actually need to go back outside? It shouldn't really gain more moisture than it loses sitting in the basement. It's not like I stuck wet wood down there...
Looking at recent trends, in years where we had a mild December, we ended up getting whacked in late January/February. So I'm not saying we're "out of the woods" just yet, I'm simply saying that I'm utterly amazed at all the more wood I've burned so far this season......and also the fact that I still haven't fired up my kitchen woodstove yet.....lol
I did just hear reports that Erie and Buffalo could get upwards of 8-10 inches of snow over the next 12 hours... Lucky buggers......
Even if it gets cold I can only burn so much in my insert. So right now my consumption will be way down compared to the past two years unless winter hangs on till May. It's just more wood for later.
Same here gents but I caution along with Mr. Overkill, we may yet get pounded-our blessing, or curse if you will, here is that El NiƱo hits the Rockies and produces big snows with all that moisture from there into the mid-west then weakens and is diminished by the upward southern breezes so I'm worried more about spring flooding again here. I have burned 1/2 cord of maple and maybe 30 splits of ash---It is in the 20's here tonight and blowing snow but just a skiff-Warms up Monday and predicting 68 on Christmas---I still think we get hammered a bit in Jan/Feb...we'll see I guess, count your blessings where you find them, or not
I was just saying the same thing to my family. Last December and the early part of January were pretty mild here, although not as mild as this year so far, but then I remember shoveling snow on the first day in spring and firing up the woodstove in early June. I'm hoping for snow too but not going to see any until 2016 here.
I don't think natures collects on debts. You get what you get. Sometimes you get slammed, then slammed again and again before you can get back up on your feet. Other times, you are neglected and nothing seems to be like it should be. There are so many new terms now. El Nino, polar vortex, (Weather Glossary | Weather Underground) but none of those change the weather. Two years ago, the Kennebec was frozen over. (tide water river) and there were ice shacks out. This year, the ground isn't frozen and there is no ice. But look at wildwest and pelletPete. ice and snow. Our state is well know for the ski resorts, but this year, all but the highest ones are idle. Our snow mobile trails remain empty. We won't be getting the tourism over the Christmas/New Years break.
Well, since you may have issues storing extraneous wood stuffs, I'll volunteer to help out. Send it my way, I have the room to store it- for you- for the future. Legit offer, you should take me up on it.
Yeah, that's el nino for you. Extremes from one end to the other. It's been warm here recently, but today it hasn't broken 28. It's 22 and flurrying now.
It is amazing isn't it. No ice, open water at the end of December in Maine. They showed some old records of the weather on the TV here in NH, the three previous warmest records for the month were back in the 1880's and 1890's. So this is nothing new and it isn't global warming. It is just a chance to get out into the woods and do more cutting.
My wood consumption is reduced but I still have been burning often. I swapped out the T6 for the Progress Hybrid this year. You know how it is with a new stove, always looking for an excuse to burn. The kids are too hot, they get ready for school then wait in the car where they can cool down. My wife and I have to sleep with the window opened a little for cool air. If I let the thermal mass in the house cool off it is a bit too chilly for me. The good part is it is too hot for some family members to stay. They are use to a 62-65 degree house so they don't stay long.
A true hoarder would rent space to store more....just sayin At this rate I may very well have one full cord burnt up by the end off the year... that includes all the uglies and other misc junk...
