Terrible pileup! Winter is here and its finally snowing and blowing. Report: 80-vehicle pile-up on U.S. 131 amid whiteout KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- Authorities are responding to a pile-up involving as many as 80 vehicles on U.S. 131, according to a Cedar Springs firefighter at the scene. Related: Whiteout conditions, numerous crashes reported in snow The crashes occurred around 3 p.m. Friday on southbound U.S. 131 near 17 Mile Road. Whiteout conditions were reported at the time. Although the number of people hurt is unclear, injuries have been minor in nature, WZZM's Adriana Mendez reports. Elsewhere, dispatchers have been fielding multiple calls of crashes, slide-offs and spin-outs since about 1 p.m.
Seems like it happens every winter here. We lost a dear close friend to the I96 pileup last winter. What a terrible way to go. She had no chance it happened so fast.... I pray for everybody involved!
When I took drivers education, they taught us to leave 1 car length stopping distance for every 10 MPH you were traveling. That's in good weather. These days it is more often I see 1 car length distance period than a reasonable safe space. Leaving proper space prevents or at least attenuates these kinds of things.
I used to commute from grand haven to Grand Rapids every day for work. I did that for 2 years and I96 and us131 were some of the worst conditions I've ever driven in.
I lived in Sister lakes (near St. Joe) and worked and went to school in Grand Rapids. I can tell stories about just how bad conditions can get on those roads. Worst snow conditions I have ever seen. Take care over the Holidays.
Pete, that is horrible news. I've been in white outs on the highway. No more. I simply stay home if there are snowflakes in the air. I've no business being out in something like that. Lets pray there are not fatalities resulting from that incident.
I cut often with my friend out that way and it's as bad as it gets with all the lake effect over there! I have been stuck more than a few times. Larry all I have heard is pileups all over the news tonight bad news all round. We stay in as much as possible too in this weather it's all ice tonight... Good lord spell check stop!
I'd rather drive on a 2 lane country road that has a foot of snow on it than drive an interstate with an inch on it. The weavers and bobers just drive me crazy....some are just in a big hurry to meet their maker. Hopefully everyone up there made it out with out much hurt but some fender benders, cars can be fixed or replaced.
Cold and winds here. Georgetown was rough this morning. Winds converge from 2 canyons and cause a mess. This morning, (last I heard)- one car going East was blown into the median and into the West bound lanes. No small feat. The same gust blew 6-7 vehicles in the West bound lanes right off the road. A guy who works in our building received a call from his son-in-law at 8:15, said he was heading west and looked in his rear view mirror, saw the cars behind him just get blown sideways. I called my wife, she was headed West to renew her D.L. in Frisco. She was just passing the mess but not affected.
I wondered what it was like over west yesterday. We had some heavy snow showers and it left the ground white. Today's sunshine didn't take long to melt the remaining snow even though we did not get above the freezing mark today. It did get to 30.
We hit 40 in the sun today this winter is turning out great for cutting! I might go out next weekend again somewhere.
I think the majority of people get caught texting on their phones which is the biggest cause of all the accidents today . When the weather gets bad people slam on their brakes and the rest is history..
Yeah I think your phone should be confiscated if you appear to be responsible for a wreck, if found to be texting, you should experience the same consequenses as a convicted drunk driver, including the programs and $$$ for a lawyer.
