Try wearing a F-you shirt to school........ Your freedom of speech will be certainly challenged. As you walk home to change it. Dan
Would anyone speak out if someone offend your parents and wife and family? It seems to me that anyone would not hesitate.
Offense is very different than harm. If they harmed or harassed that is a very different and aggressive behavior. Passively using words publicly displaced is truly harmless....
Well, we have no idea of what the shirt said. It was presented as a (possibly offensive) political statement, and not as a F-You. As such, the response was appropriate. If it were blatantly intended to offend, the proprietor could have (or may not have, as desired) asked her to not come into the establishment, and she would have been morally obligated to respect his private property rights by not entering. But that was not the case presented. The current discussion is a side track from the question.
You are correct -- We submerge many rights in situations / places geared to minors. I am not certain why with what passes for civil behavior in many schools today though.
I feel no compulsion to right every offensive thing someone may say to or about me or my loved ones. I try to allow people to be stupid if they desperately want to, no skin off my back.
Yoop- it was exactly a political statement type of chit...I just didn't want to taint the issue with folks political leanings....basically said..."******* for Prison, 2016", rather than "******* for President, 2016"....... I guess for me, I read it something like this: "I am deeply offended by that shirt because its not supporting the candidate I LOVE, so, since I cant do anything about it, well, Im pi$$ed and have to make SOMEONE pay, might as well be you, since you didn't throw her out of your place" or somesuch....... Hey, its ok if she was offended, that's fine. The funny thing is, she didn't say a thing while there, but waited till she got home to send the complaint via email....not much ya can do after both proponents have left, is there?
As a business owner you have no responsibility to make strangers fight nice... you did the right thing
Controlled environments like our schools are much more restrictive than that. Try wearing a Star Wars shirt to school: Texas School Bans Star Wars T-shirt Because There Is a Gun on It
Heck, if i got my feelings hurt by every t-shirt i didn't agree with, I'd never leave the house. Too blame the business owner for the actions or choice of shirt of a customer is RIDICULOUS!
