I am back and catching up on a lot of good posts. My wife and I were hit last week by an inattentive driver. We are doing well now and the truck is in the shop for repair. It was no fun being stopped in traffic and seeing headlights in the rear view mirror approaching without stopping. Ma. really needs to get their hands-free mobile device driving law enacted soon. I don't know what the other driver was doing, but eyes were not on the road.

LinkedXJ, I hope you have a good recovery from yours. That was quite a hit you got there. These things can happen so quick.

We had to cancel my wife's birthday party last weekend but we had a smaller one last night to bring the holiday cheer back into our home.

I made the annual Buche de Noel cake with marzipan mushrooms for my wife. I went with the birch log again.

I am a week behind on my secret santa gift, so I'll be working on that today.

Jon glad you're doing OK - been there watching a vehicle approaching without stopping
    Nice cake:thumbs:

As for a hand-free law fixing any of these idiots that think their text is more important than someone else's safety - won't work unless its DUI type punishment

Thanks basod. NH has the law before Ma. which really surprised me. I travel a bit in NH weekly and most drivers obey the law. In Ma. it is disturbing to watch so many drivers on devices. We have a no texting law since I believe 2010, but drivers are still viewing messages, which is a no-no under the law.

Had a bit of scare last night. Went to bed ~2100 and GF came in somewhere ~2200 telling me they smelt something electrical burning.
Woke up and could smell it - smelled like a transformer burning up. They had already shut off the Christmas tree(put LED's on it this year) sniffed all over it appeared normal.
Had to go outside to clear my sense of smell to try and pinpoint it - somewhere in the kitchen.
I threw everything in the panel off grabbed the fire extinguisher and went to bed.

Get up this morning and the lingering smell was still there, just found a CFL over the sink with a burned base.

I hear yah, one of the reasons the bride and I have retired from touring on the Goldwing. Didn't want to entertain the prospect of spending our retirement years in wheel chairs due to some idiot playing with their I-Phone on Facebook @ 70 mph.

In our small town, we had a student hit a bus broad side as he was reading or texting his phone. Fortunately, it was a low speed. No damage to the bus and students that were on it. I don't know how much damage to his vehicle.

Very glad to hear you fishingpol and your wife are doing well this week. I had forgotten about the cake you usually make. This one looks good. ("When I retire") I am going to try making one.

Cripes when I was starting to feel down about some rotten things going on around our house LinkedXJ and fishingpol reminded me just how lucky I am.

Hope both you guys are doing well and glad things didn't turn out any worse for either of you.

Sounds like your guardian angel showed up just in time!

    Take care!

Great alertness on her part. (Remember when those bulbs were forced down our throats? Best thing since sliced bread, they were.) I don't know if anything could have happened, but its better safe than sorry!

CFLs have already proven to be a interim "solution" to the energy "crisis". LEDs are close to the CFLs in light output and overall cost, and they get significantly better every year. Already they have fewer operational drawbacks than CFLs although I'd like to see more of them rated for fully enclosed fixtures.

I bought a chit-ton of CFLs when we moved in here 6 years ago that did indeed lower our electric bill by quite a bit. I've replaced at least 75% of them at this point so the 7-10 year life estimates are a joke. We shall see how the LEDs hold up. Now I just need to find some LEDs that are economical enough to run in 6-8 lamp chandeliers.

I'm thinking of changing the whole fixture as it is a GU24 base that is only wired for low wattage CFL's, and they don't last very long.

I just put in 35 LEDs to replace CFLs this week. I can get them dirt cheap from our PoCo.

More than a few LED lamps available in GU24.
