X2 for here in oregon, farmers get away with just about whatever they want. As long as it has farm plates on it. The dot doesnt hassle the landscapers where i live, but they have cracked down on the private not for hire semis pulling huge horse trailers. If a guy had a setup like what were talking about here its just keep it away from weigh stations, the cops dont seem to care as long as the lights all work,

 

NY seems to be the worst. I pay close to $200 a year to register my 20 ft landscape trailer, which I registered for 10K lbs. I would love this trailer, but I would need a new truck. I would also register with DOT and number up the truck since the cops find this stuff to be easy money. I almost bought the small ATV trailer at an auction once. Gotta love toys

 

So an individual with a decent size trailer and a 3/4 ton truck have to have DOT numbers? I'm talking strict personal use...none of this side business shady no license stuff??

 

For strict personal use no. But it would be touch and go and hard to explain using a $100k plus (truck and trailer) for pure personal use. They can still scale the axles, check the fuel etc on personal vehicles here.

 

I mean they can do the latter here but dont..other than diping tanks.

Some people just have diesel 3-4-1 ton trucks and dont have a biz. Some people also own a tractor that is not business. Going between property or tractor collector.

 

I see your 10K and raise you. In Mass I used to pay $200/year for my 8K lb. trailer. Then I got smart and pay $200 for 5 years by registering it in Maine.

That is the plan starting next year All of the big transport companies do it also. If only I could do the same with the real estate taxes....

 

Yea I heard about the main trailer registration deal. I think kentucky has a similar deal. Lots of over the road trailers are registered in maine.

Lots of guys on the tractor site I'm on have maine registered trailers ;-)

 

Maine must be making a killing on this, and good for them to do so. I am working over the next month to get back into a 1 ton diesel, with the intent to make my weekends hoards into a side business. The next year will be a busy one....

 

Then for someone like you that trailer would be great!! The cost of that trailer is nothing compared to a new diesel pickup. You can pick up logs and even just big rounds. Put some side boards on that bad boy and haul rounds. Just have to be able to get near the wood

 

A year or two back the state police in MI started cracking down on trucking companies headquartered in Michigan with MI company owned trailers that are registered in Maine. The state realized they were missing out on a lot of $$$.

I paid $75 for a permanent trailer plate for my utility trailer. I think if it's over 3000 pounds the fee is $200 and $300 for 10000 or more. Not a bad deal if you plan to own the trailer for a long time.

I've heard of people who have homemade trailers and swap one plate between whatever trailer they're towing that day. The registration for a homemade trailer doesn't have a VIN or serial number attached to it.

The maine thing is not illegal is it? Kind of side steps locals laws and the wording right?

I forget all the posts I have read on it about that aspect and I havent looked into it for my state as we dont tag small homeowner trailers even dual axle trailers for personal use.
