My Dad stopped by my office the other day and called me out to see his new truck. I was looking at it and noticed a saw in the bed. I asked him about it and he said Happy house warming! (i bought a house 2 years ago as a shell and am having a house warming next weekend after two years of work) Anyways its a like new 5100s Dolmar! I am excited. I've only ran Huskys, Stihls and Jonsereds, so my first Dolmar! People have mentioned about switching to a 3/8's chain instead of the stock .325. Do you guys have any recommendations? I know about the high RPM and mixing the fuel a little richer than the 50:1 as well as keeping the carb clean and good fuel in it.
The Dolly 5100s is a good saw but it is really wound up. They had problems with air leaks on the carb gasket on some models and they tend to be tuned too lean in the US (tuned at the factory in Germany with their far better gas). I would tune it richer at WOT (4-stroke/burple). I have run many tests with 3/8 vs. .325 and they cut about the same, because the kerf is the same. Unless you go with NK in .325, its a coin toss. I prefer 3/8 myself, and I have it on my 50cc J-red 535 and 026s, and all my larger saws.
The Dolmar is a very nice saw. Sleek and se#y looking. It is strong enough to pull 3/8". I prefer it, so I don't have to change stones and carry different files. One size chain. Nice score. But as you know? Pics = Never happened
