I need a new winter coat. I stumbled across oilskin jackets and am intrigued. Have never felt wore or seen one. Anyone out there have any experience with them.
Yup, have a complete rain suit made out of it. Treat it annually with the preservative and it is great. Wears like iron. Had it for 11 years now.
Would it be comparable to Filson's tin cloth jacket? Wears like iron! Very rugged, guaranteed forever.
Ive got a Kakadu oil skin duster with a liner and that coat will "roast yur nads" unless its under 10 degrees out.
They don't breathe well. I don't have a coat but I do have a oil skin (waxed cotton) ball cap that will keep your head very warm unless it's cold and damp out.
I am looking at either the "Ironbark" or "Copperfield" oilskin jackets. Have any of you had experienced one or the other?
Nearly a year later but it was worth the wait. I just got my oilskin 3/4 length jacket/short duster and can't believe how I instantly fell in love with it. The jacket part was amazingly heavy and well put together. Then I snapped in the arctic fleece liner. I now am wanting winter to strike and hard. It was in the upper 30's and I roasted out of that thing in no time flat. I think this is probably the best coat I have ever owned. I will give a report once it gets cold and really see how it handles things but I think this was one of those purchases you never will regret.
All of the above Yooper! It is rain and wind proof, the liner will slow cook you and I am glad I can snap it out. I bet with the liner in the coat is 10 lbs. It reminds me of the heavy quilt my grandmother made me, almost smothers you but is the warmest blanket I own. I really like the shoulder cape to shed rain n snow and the hood rolls into the collar so it is out of the way when not needed. LOVE IT!
Any suggestions on how to clean or care for the waxed canvas materials? I have stayed away because of that
From my reading on that take out the liner clean it per instructions. Outer shell blast with water only and let dry. For stubborn spots spot clean with rag and mild soap dry and reseal. Hope someone with experience can chime in as my learnin is only frum a book.
Nice coat! I doubt you'll need the fleece liner if you are moving in that coat at all. I have a couple of oilskin ball caps and the are by far the warmest caps I own. They don't breath the greatest. Great for cold wet days. I like to wear them when snow blowing.
