Might be yesterdays turkey dinner talking, but man this stuff is heavy! Feels heavier than BL and almost as hard on the chain. Mockernut or pignut im guessing. Smells kinda like pizz which surprised me. Might start busting them up tomorrow after i do another splitting job. Hope it dries well enough in 20-24 months. Will make up 25% of a mix thats half oak and 25% black birch for 17/18. The oak is already put up. No pics. Will try to remember tomorrow.
Great coal reaper - I think near two years on the hickory will be pretty darn good. That will be a nice mix for that burn year. Hardly any hickory around here.....Cheers!
I haven't burned much hickory but I hear it's very dense and can be hard on chains. I also hear it's great firewood! I don't know how long it takes to dry - I'm guessing 2 years would do it but others may chime in with experience.
I have many many large hickories behind my house. Feels like blocks of concrete it is so heavy. Burns great after two years. Splits like a dream though. Enjoy
Only cut one large mockernut on my place and that was 3 years ago. Plan to burn it this winter, if it ever gets cold enough. So far just burning silver maple and cherry and some ash on the 25 degree nights and only a couple of those so far.
If you get it split you'll be golden in 2 years. I have burnt a fair amount of hickory and 2 years has always been good. You better stop by confession " Father I have sinned and not included pictures for my fellow hoarders" and I'm not even Catholic.
Nc30 eats shag and pignut like a champ alittle over a year split. Great secondaries and closing air fast. Figure seasoned an extra year sure wouldnt hurt. Need to put a batt in my mm and check it now tho im curious
I'm only familiar with shagbark hickory. That stuff is heavy as can be, and its second only to osage orange btu wise. IMHO, is the best firewood you can get. I have great success drying in in a year once split. I can't imagine other species of hickory take any longer to season. Besides oak, pretty much every word will be seasoned in 2 years, and even oak will be ready in that time too if you give it the right conditions.
Sounds like you got a few calories burned off and going to burn maybe some more today... Should be some great BTU's for the wood pile...
Where i been cutting. The rounds down the sides is hickory. Back of truck is oak and towards the Front is a few birch. Off to work!
I cut some hickory about a year and a half ago and it's ready to burn now, it will go in the stove towards the end of the burning season this year if it ever gets cold here! You're right, it is a pain on chains, I went through a couple myself. Had a lot of uglies with that tree too....
Dead standing ? the dead dry stuff is hard , but should split pretty good & burn even better in 17/18 ! " PRIMO " BTUs there !
Some woods are like that. I just took a Chinese elm ( stinkwood ) down and its incredible heavy but who it dries its like paper... The last load of hickory was probably 2 years ago for us an d its nice n light now. Enjoy it Hickory burns wonderful!
I must have been lucky when I cut up a shag hickory last year. It wasn't any harder on the chain then any other wood. Wood had not been dragged either before cutting.
This particular hickory was dropped in the summer when they logged my property. Bark is starting to peel off. Idk why they didnt take it, very straight and no rot. Anyway none of it got split today. Seven hours splitting somebody elses wood and i am not about to come home and mess with my own stash. I did split a six pack tho, six different time since i been home.
