Thanks for the suggestions. Actually, I haven't seen him with a hat on yet, but not a bad idea. I've always been a believer of practical gifts. The wife is still going to send him a TSC gift card, but I was thinking today that I might buy him a fuel can and fill it with diesel and put it up by his barn with a note on it when he's not there. And maybe a spool of barbed wire. He's got miles of barbed wire fence there. I think one of the reasons he takes care of me is that I show respect for his property and always clean up my mess. We've even cleaned up brush that wasn't ours. When I'm done cutting in an area, all he has to do is light the pile on fire.
The ground is still wet, but at least I was able to get the jeep up there today. Was nice to get back to cutting. He has a bunch more trees pushed over, so I hope I can make it back up there tomorrow before the rain starts. Don't know what kind this horse of his is, but it's beautiful. Last time I dropped a tree, it took the top off of a small locust. When I went back today, I found it uprooted. So I guess I gave myself some bonus wood. There was another downed locust on top the hill, but it was mostly rotted, so I cut it up and threw everything I couldn't salvage on a brush pile.
The horse is an Appaloosa, what a beautiful place and props to you for nurturing such a respectful stewardship with the landowner. No wonder he likes you, respect is a seldom seen attribute these days. He will be humbled by any gesture you extend to him, I'm certain of it. Nice work too!
The wife helped me get a load today. She gets disappointed if we don't go up there at least once on the weekend. Been wanting to put some wheels on one of my wood racks for a while now. Today I decided to put one of them on furniture dollies and load the wood onto it and then roll it onto the patio. It worked, but the little wheels didn't roll well with all that weight. Definitely need bigger wheels when I get around to putting some on. I did figure out that the jeep holds about 36 cubic ft of wood.
Today's load filled up the GC. Most I've gotten in there so far. I even had to take on some passengers, Dusky style.
Today's load included more locust and the GC was packed. Tom, the owner came down to BS with the wife and I. He comes to talk with us usually when she's with me. Anyway, we gabbed for about 20 minutes or so and just before he started his tractor to leave, he asked if we were the ones that sent the TSC gift card and thanked us.
It was a nice day for cutting wood. Last weekend the owner told us there were some smaller trees around the back of his house that we could cut. I think he may have sensed I was getting tired of the big ones. So today, the wife and I drove over to that part of the property and what do you know, he had a bunch of small trees knocked down for us. As usual, we were being watched. Wife heard the bull today and thought it was a fog horn. One jeep load.
I like the pieces the big rounds make, but these will really be nice for a change. I have a few monsters waiting in the wings that I'm not looking forward to.
Cut a small load today. Hit a rock while I was cutting and that just screwed everything up. Seems like I can never get the chain very sharp when I'm in the field.
Went and cut a load on black Friday, then the wife and I split that load and the load we got before it. When we got to the farm, the owner was there on his bobcat, dropping trees and dragging them to the top of the hill. It's great when the trees are lined up and all I have to do is cut them. Wanted to go back for a second load, but I ran out of bar oil and wasn't going near any stores. I'm sure there will still be plenty on the ground when I go back next weekend. So far I have over 8 cords split from this one source and all the rounds are cleared off the driveway. It's good to be at a point where I can rack each load and roll it to the splitter.
Good for you. Your getting some good exercise bud. It must be nice when they drop them big logs in front for you. Nice hook up...nice looking stuff. Keep getting what you can bud...
