Hey guys, thought id share this trick i learned somewhere else... Put a tire on top of yout splitting block and put your smaller to mid sized rounds in the tire. Then swing away. No more running around the yard bending over to pick up and set back up for another split.... I think the wheel size on this tire is 14" and it works pretty good for me.
Yup. An old trick. Some find it useful but I never did. More trouble than it was worth to me but if it helps, use it.
I have been using a tire on the stump that is my splitting block. I left mine loose so that I could just drag it off to remove all the bits of bark and such that would otherwise build up inside.
Bobdog...good idea. Chasing splits is never fun. Of course some of us can swing the maul just once and it not only splits it into four perfect pieces but they also fly into a perfectly stacked row without being touched. I don't want to mention any names (Schlot) or anything as I'm sure that member would rather remain anonymous (Schlot)
Good idea I used an ATV tire, a little taller Cut the sidewall out & turned it inside out Star the bottom to use for screws on the plywood, screw the plywood to the stump Works good for kindling too: has been replace for a few years now : Still split vertical though :::
I've thought about doing this since I've been burning to heat my home....................4th year now. I've used nothing but my Fiskars X-25 for 98% of my wood in that time. Them Fiskars are damm sharp..................would I tear up the tires pretty quick????? Or would the steel belts in the tires do a number on the business edge of my Fiskars???
The tire flexes when you miss and hit the tire so it doesn't deteriorate too fast and doesn't harm the maul either. I have small nicks all over the sidewall on my tire but I don't ever intend to put it on a wheel so I don't really care.
I almost never miss BWS!!!! Often times when I hand split; my Fiskars winds up in my splitting stump after going thru what I'm splitting. I was just wondering about it hitting the bead of the tires and all...............................
You can cut out the bead. I need a bigger cutting block, full size truck tire now slips over the block.
Have seen this trick before but have never used it. I prefer to just split the wood where it lies, rather than pick it up to put it inside a tire. I also just split on the ground so I don't have to pick the pieces up more than I have to. But looks like a good trick and if people find it useful then have it!
I use a X27 and never had problems with the tire. Those tires can take a lot of abuse. You won't get into the steel belt. A lot of flex in those tires. I double my tires up so the splits stay in and there is a little more flex if you do hit the top tire.
Always wanted to try but I've never had an old tire laying around nor a large enough splitting block.
