I burn 2 to 3 cords a year, so I need 3 cord stored in dry locations. I have 2 small wood sheds 1 holds a cord, the other only 3/4 of a cord. So my 3rd cord is going under my house (house is on stilts) up against a wall. Anyone else store wood against the house?
I'll have my 2.5- 3 cords that's at my buddies house soon enough. I attach it right on the patio next to the house. There's no real forest fires here.
As long as it stays cold all winter, you shouldn't have any bug issues, right? Wildfires aren't too much of an issue on the great south bay marshlands.....
Is it on the gable end or under the eaves? I wouldn't stack wood where the water from the roof lands.
I stack a row along the house under a gable end. I just make sure it all gets burned by spring so no critters move in for the summer.
I stack most of my wood against the gable end of my detached garage. Will be adding on a 40 x 20 roof on the eave side this spring though.
My shed is attached to the house with a pass through. First wood in is first out. Holds +/-3 cords. Furnace room holds 1.5 cord stacked to the ceiling. Also have a stack right out back with 5-7 cord with another separate pass through. The stack out back gets thrown in the furnace room first until the snow gets too deep. Usually end of January or February. Then I grab from the attached shed which I can do in slippers. Wood in the shed never gets used completely. Some has been in there for 8-9 years.
I stack a cord or so under my covered porch on my deck. It doesn't actually touch my house but I have not had any issues as of yet.
I agree, I've seen water pouring off of roofs onto stacked wood. I just shake my head. If it doesn't get all burnt up by spring, you could get problems with carpenter ants.
We bring some wood up to the covered deck that will last a few weeks, but other than that, it stays away from the house.
I'm more concerned about banging up the cedar siding than anything else. The one area that doesn't have siding would be the same as going to the wood pile and there's no protection there. That precludes me having a stack against my house.
I do not stack against the house. There are enouph critters around here trying go get in and do not want to encourage them.
"Precludes" is one of my favorite words to use! Nice, PB Come on, NH mountain man, let's get you a dictionary
I have a rack with half cord against the garage wall. This year in lieu of a full blown firewood shed, I stacked 2.5 cords on pallets in front of my garage. (The garage is not for car storage now and my driveway is plenty long) I'm definitely not in a fire risk area.
I stack all wood right against vinyl siding on covered deck. do not worry about fires (snow doesn't burn well and had close to 30 inches of rain in June) I been doing it for 5 years never had a problem.
