I got an old blaze king stove this fall and installed it just recently. The problem is once the door is opened a certain amount, smoke comes inside, it also smokes inside when I am lighting the fire. I never had this problem with my other stove, but the other stove was quite a bit smaller. The blaze king had a 8 inch stack but I used a reducer because my chimney is set up for 6. It also has what I believe is a cat but it looks like it could be aftermarket because it is in the pipe above the stove and the cat is gone. I don't know if I should just get rid of that because I don't plan on buying a cat. Any suggestions?

Can be normal during shoulder season, but having the collar reduced and two 90° wont help with draft. Cold weather should help, but I suspect youll still have some spillage.

Could just be the pic, but it looks like the horizontal portion of the pipe between the elbows has a slight downward slope.
Smoke/exhaust doesn't much like going downhill.
Should be a rise there. The pipe coming off the stove is too tall if that's the case.
So, the cat is still in the pipe, but gone in the stove?
    Is the pipe cat clogged?

I think the only cat was in the piece directly above the stovetop that has the little lever that slides back and forth. But the actual cat is gone it's just an empty housing and when you move the little lever the air gets redirected. The horizontal pipe does have a slight downslope so I will fix that, but I'm not sure how to get rid of the two 90's without losing wall clearance.

You could drop the vertical piece, then angle the bottom elbow up, and add a small section of pipe between the 2 elbows. That might also smooth out the airflow.
The downslope might be the biggest problem though.
I think you need at least 1/4" rise per foot of horizontal run, but more is always better.
I'd check with BK too to see if restricting the air down to 6" is ok. You could also replace all the stovepipe inside (elbows too) with 8", with an increaser at the ceiling.
    Should help flow.
So, no cat in the stove?

Check for any obstructions in stove and chimney. If none are found, then you probably need a Draft-Booster.

No cat in stove. I don't think I want to buy one at least until I get the stove working right.

I built the chimney a few years ago and with my other stove I always had such a good draft, it kind of threw me when the new stove didn't work right.

I will try to rework the piping this week and report back results.

That draft booster looks neat but I could lay up a new chimney for $429.

Not sure this will help....we bought the house I am in now a couple years ago, our blaze king was coated with creosote from burning wet wood over the last 30 years. We were actually getting flashback when opening the door like when there is too much gas in the BBQ and it singes your eyebrows. AND........it was smokey. It was at the worst time with -20* below for several nights, we burned it hot enough to ignite the creosote coating inside the stove.....

TMI, that particular creosote smoke was triggering migraines in the wifey.......

Just wondering too, when was the last flue cleaning?
    How's the cap look?

No cap and chimney has stayed quite clean with the old stove. I have only burned the blaze king a couple times this fall.

The stove is clean inside no creosote buildup.

So, once up to temp, is this still a problem when you open the door?
I still think the biggest problem is the horizontal downslope.
Hope it's an easy fix.

I'd think the stove pipe needs more vertical rise before an elbow is added.

I redid the pipe and took out the cat holder. I also reworked the pipe going into the chimney so it has the right downslope. I did a little test with some burning newspaper and I think it worked but I have to wait 24 hrs for the refractory cement to set.

Yes, it was a problem even when the stove was up to temp.

This weekend it will be getting cold and it will get the first real test.

    Good deal.
I hope that takes care of the problem for you.
Man, you got right after that. Gooder.

Thanks for the advice! It helps to have other people take a look and point out things that I really didn't take into account.

Now, you might change your mind about a cat in the stove. 12-24 hour burns and longer would be nice, eh?
